Wests’ John Buchanan praises team bowling effort as University continue to set the pace

Blake Edwards may have secured the best figures but Wests coach John Buchanan praised the “collective effort’’ of the attack which got the job done in a local derby against Valley.

Blake Edwards may have secured the best figures but Wests coach John Buchanan praised the “collective effort’’ of the attack which got the job done in a local derby against Valley.

Defending just 231, Edwards (5-68) muscled up while Ryan Tazelaar (4-40) swept in support of Wests’ fast bowling enforcer.

But Buchanan said excellent support bowling from Jonte Pattison and Aidan Watterson and “good fielding in the main’’ all played its part.

Valley had challenged with gusto as Jack Beath (46) and Nick Stevens (44) added 85 after the early loss of Lachlan Pfeffer (6).

But Edwards bowled Stevens and had Beath caught behind by gloveman Isaiah Snell while, between those dismissals, Tazelaar came up with the key wicket of Andrew Gode (0) who also nicked behind to Snell. From 1-91, Valley collapsed to 7-120.

Buchanan praised Edwards whom he said “you couldn’t get the ball out of his hand’’.

Chasing bonus points, Wests then thrashed 5-154 in its second innings from 29.2 overs, with Sam Dennien (53 not out, 37 balls) leading the way.

More bonus points came when Wests reduced Valley to 3-57 in its second innings.

Wests, who host Sandgate-Redcliffe at Graceville this weekend, sit in second position (89 competition points) behind premiers University (79).

University continued to flex its cricket muscle in both the Premier grade and Raymond Shield women’s competitions.

University’s men overpowerd Sunshine Coast and although the women were washed out, there was still enough time for an eye-catching batting effort.

Evergreen Scott Walter took his 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th wickets of the Premier season in claiming 4-40 as Uni (9-297) climbed over the Sunshine Coast (201).

After being challenged early, University’s bowlers worked their way through the batting order.

Supporting Walter was Sam Bedford (2-39) whose 22 wickets at just 17.95 this season is unheralded. Bedford has taken no more than three wickets in an innings this summer, but is playing an ideal support role.

In the Raymond Shield, University have to stomach sharing the top of the table with Gold Coast (both 18 points) after a storm ruined its chance of victory in the local derby against Wests.

University made a 218 (49 overs) after Katelyn Beaumont (39) and Lucinda Jensen (40) added 90 for the first wicket.
