An innovative coffee roaster, hailing from Sydney and Japan, has launched its first Queensland outlet in the heart of Newstead.
Coffee Roaster Single O opened today, August 31.
The new cafe featured Single O’s signature coffee, self-serve batch brew taps and a classic coffee bar menu with a few favourites from its Surry Hills cafe).
This year marked 20 years of Single O.
The Newstead coffee bar would be Queensland’s first coffee-on-tap counter.
It would offer a unique experience of self-serve filter coffee on tap including rotating single origin batch brews and its cult favourite, Oat Iced Latte.
For espresso lovers, there was also the company’s signature blend Reservoir.
Rotating single origins were specially selected for espresso and long black.
Via a local spin on its long standing Affogato Project, Single O served up a collab with Brisbane’s own Allora Black gelato makers; an affogato featuring Kenya/Costa Rica coffee infused gelato, topped with a shot of that same single origin coffee.
All are served via La Marzocco machinery, in cups by ceramist Malcolm Greenwood.
Owner Dion Cohen, the chef of the original Single O back in 2003, has crafted a menu that pays homage to those origins.
The menu featured an array of delightful sandos, toasties, and pastries sourced from Brisbane favourite Agnes Bakery.
The menu also had favourites from Single O’s Surry Hills location, including the iconic Banana Bread with Espresso Butter and a mini version of its Avo Show.
“We’ve been working behind the scenes with some of Queensland’s best cafes and hospitality partners from Gold Coast and Brisbane for over 10 years, including places like Bread Social, Paddock Bakery, Gramps Cafe and Told You So, to name a few,” Single O’s Mike Brabant said.
“Brisbane particularly is a place that’s changing every day with amazing hospo venues opening and more people moving to Queensland each year.
“The food culture is becoming one of the best in the country.
“Opening our humble Newstead coffee bar, which is connected to our coffee training and distribution space where we service our local cafe clients from, is big for us.
“It gives us a touchpoint for our cafe friends and a chance to serve the local community, sharing the Single O spirit of having fun, honouring quality and brewing up differently.”
The design of Single O Newstead reflected its philosophy of “origin’’ and sustainability.
Local Brisbane producers included Agnes Bakery and Allora Black gelato, while community partner Mallow Sustainability has been engaged for circular waste.
Milk was sourced from farms a few hours south via Norco and from up north, while hand-thrown plates came from Kim Wallace Ceramics in Noosa.
Raw materials inside the venue blended with recycled plastic bar tops and stools by Defy Design, embodying Single O’s eco-conscious values.
There was also a wall mural, crafted by internationally artist Gemma O’Brien.
Ms O’Brien’s art built on the bespoke artwork she created for the Single O art bag series.
She was born in Brisbane and this was the first large scale wall painting she created in her hometown.
Single O is at 16 Austin St and is open Monday to Friday, 6.30am-1.30pm, as well as Saturdays from 7am-1.30pm.
