The expansion of Birkdale Station park n ride is one step closer after the release of the final concept design.
About 40 extra car spaces would be added on a vacant lot at Napier St, next to the train station, as well as accessibility upgrades to help the elderly, those with mobility issues and mums with prams.
There would be five motorbike spaces, a kiss n ride facility, a new bus shelter with the existing bus stop moved closer to the train station, bike racks and secure bike lockers, new pathways from Napier St and CCTV cameras and security lighting.
The eastern carpark would also be reconfigured to make it easier for people with disabilities to use.
A business case was recently completed.
The project was part of a major upgrade of park n ride stations, or construction of new stations, worth about $500 million, which would add 2400 extra parking spaces across southeast Queensland.
“By using the vacant land between the eastern and western car parks, which in fact was my
old preschool, we can deliver 40 additional spaces and better accessibility to train services,’’
Capalaba state Labor MP Don Brown said.
“What’s great is this development will also include accessible spaces, so everyone can
easily access Birkdale station.”
“We will also improve the experience for customers by moving the existing bus stop closer to
the station and constructing a new bus shelter and kiss n ride facility.
“When combined with additional motorcycle parking spaces and facilities for bike riders,
we’re making it easier for everyone to catch the train.”
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said park n ride facilities were an important
element of the transport network and, when delivered in the right locations, allowed
customers to connect with high-frequency public transport.
“Over the next few years, my department will deliver more than 2400 new park n ride
spaces, adding to the 34,200-plus spaces already available to customers across the
network,” Mr Bailey said.
