The Forest Lake junior Australian football club under 13 girls are premiers after an extraordinary grand final win over Morningside last weekend.

Forest Lake conjured up a four point win after the match was sent plummeting into extra time.

“Playing five minutes extra time each way, the girls pulled together as a team and won 23-19,’’ said president Anna O’Donohue.

“We are very proud of the coach Sebastian Galafrio and the under 13 girls for the awesome season that they have had and look forward to 2020 season.’’

In the milestone season Forest Lake also had three players pass 100 games for the club.

The side was made up of players largely from the Forest Lake Dragons and Ipswich Eagle’s Girls.

O’Donohue said the group was a mixture of girls who had been playing together since aged eight years, to first season players.

“Even though they may not always get to train together every week the coaches have been working on developing their skills and confidence to come together on game day to play as a team and they have been very successful finishing on top of the ladder,’’ she said.

Forest Lake has a proud tradition in this age group.

In 2016 the club’s first ever side in the under 13 competition finished minor premiers and won the competition.

“So having the Forest Lake Dragons under 13 girls being so successful again in 2019 has been an exciting time for the club.’’

She said 2020 was set to be another exciting season, with teams from Roy’s Juniors Football (age six) through to under 8s, 9s 10s and under 12s) playing.

There will also be girls’ teams in the under 11, under 13 and under 15 age groups.
