Three bumbling teenage housemates from Brisbane’s southwest who used a knife, wrench and hammer to rob two convenience stores were caught after one of them used his mother’s car as the getaway vehicle, a court has heard.
Inala trio Dexter Hollane Toetoe, 20, Treyvond Arthur Paul Duncan, 19, and Moremu Houngarongo Hei Hei, 19, who has since moved to Palm Beach, all pleaded guilty in Brisbane District Court on Tuesday to two counts of armed robbery in company.
The court heard the two armed robberies occurred at the Freedom Fuel Inala and BP Merrimac service stations on March 29 – 30 last year.
The trio had been drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis at the residence they shared when they stumbled upon the idea of robbing a service station.
They bundled themselves into a car belonging to one of their mothers, with Toetoe the driver, and proceeded to the Freedom Fuels about 10.45pm on the 29th.
Hei Hei, armed with a hammer, and Duncan, armed with a knife, with both wearing bandannas on their faces, stormed the service station by removing the glass door from its runner while the attendee locking herself in a storeroom.
The pair were unable to gain access to the console area, so instead pilfered an armful of chocolates, sunglasses and, bizarrely, an EFTPOS terminal.
The housemates then drove to BP Merrimac and robbed it about 12.15am the following.
This time, all three entered the store, again wearing bandannas over their face, with Toetoe arming himself with a wrench and demanded the attendee to “give me your money”.
Duncan jumped the counter as the attendee locked herself in a storeroom, and grabbed the till, which contained about $200 petty cash, while Hei Hei shoved more chocolates into his backpack.
The trio then departed, with Toetoe requisitioning the hammer to smash the glass entrance door which had locked behind them.
The trio were apprehended a short while later as police had no trouble tracing the registration plates of the vehicle, which was captured on CCTV.
The court heard they had no prior criminal history before the two armed robberies.
Duncan and Hei Hei were sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, with immediate court-ordered parole.
Toetoe was sentenced to two years and 10 months’ imprisonment, in light of the fact he spent 74 days remanded in pre-sentence custody.
