Nicholas Ham, Mikayla Scott: Pair sentenced for Carindale drug den

A young Logan man has been jailed for trafficking in MDMA and cocaine, while his partner has also been sentenced for her part in the operation.

The economics of the Drug Trade

A young Logan trafficker of MDMA and cocaine was so addicted to drugs he gave himself seizures and a psychosis, while his partner at the time also helped herself to his massive party drug stash, a court has heard.

Logan Reserve man Nicholas Barry Ham, 25, and his former partner Mikayla Jade Scott, 25, who is understood to live in the Logan Central area, were both sentenced in Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday to a range of drug offences stemming from when they lived together at Carindale.

Ham alone pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, while both pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing a Schedule 1 drug in excess of 2g and possessing cash obtained as the proceeds of drug trafficking.

The court heard when a search warrant was executed on the pair’s residence on October 19, 2019, police uncovered an extraordinary amount of drugs, paraphernalia and cash secreted throughout the home.

They uncovered 379 capsules of MDMA, with a pure weight of 12.9g in a total of 132.8g of substance; 7.05g of pure cocaine in 10.7g of substance; $99,250 cash squirrelled away in various locations; 7g of cannabis; and various paraphernalia, including a bong, coffee grinder, clipseal bags, digital scales and an extendible baton weapon.

Analysis of the pair’s bank accounts revealed another $46,000 or so, taking their total turnover from the trafficking operation to just shy of $150,000.

Phone records indicated Ham had been trafficking in the drugs since at least December 31 the year prior, a period of some 10 months.

Crown prosecutor Toby Corsbie described it as “fairly intensive street level trafficking”, with the profits being used to support their living expenses, as they were unemployed.

It was accepted there was a mixed commercial-personal aspect to the operation, as Scott was regularly helping herself to the supply and there was an expectation that she would do so.

The court heard the pair had since split up and relocated separately to the Logan area.

Ham found work at a Crestmead fencing company, while Scott did the same at a Springwood self-storage business.

Counsel on behalf of both defendants submitted extensive evidence of clean urinary tests.

Scott was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment with immediate court-ordered parole.

Justice Jean Dalton expressed confidence her offending was “contextual” and that she would remain clean.

Ham, meanwhile, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, suspended after serving 12 months.

He was also placed on a lengthy probation order.

Justice Dalton said Ham had numerous warning signs along the way that he needed to turn his life around, including that he gave himself pancreatitis from alcohol abuse, as well as seizures and psychosis from his heavy drug use, and yet he did not heed the warnings.
