Big staff changes at two leading inner-Brisbane private schools

A well-respected Deputy Headmaster who steered a leading Brisbane private school through one of its toughest eras is moving overseas with his wife, who also holds a senior role at a top girls’ school.

Brisbane Boys’ College deputy headmaster and head of senior school Damon Emtage will step down at the end of the year after being chosen as the new principal of a New Zealand school.

Mr Emtage’s wife Kathryn, the associate dean of student wellbeing at Somerville House girls’ school in South Brisbane, will move with him to New Zealand.

BBC today (August 10) began advertising for a replacement for Mr Emtage, who helped steer the college through one of its darkest periods when it was rocked by internal scandals and mass resignations.

He led the school after the resignation of headmaster Paul Brown in February last year, until Andre Casson took over the role in January after an international search.

“I am delighted to share that Damon has been offered and has accepted the position of principal at Saint Kentigern College in Auckland,’’ Mr Casson said in a letter to parents.

“This is an exceptional appointment for Damon, who will be moving in November into his first headship role at this prestigious school.

“Damon’s last day at the college will be October 21, although he will be returning for Speech Night and Valedictory Events on the week commencing November 14.

“During his five years at BBC, Damon has led with a passion and drive to ensure that each young man under his care was able to thrive.

“Damon has fostered an incredibly strong group of Year Team Leaders and Heads of House who have inspired the environment of success that is an integral part of the BBC culture.

“He was the chief architect of our current student leadership structure, which has afforded our boys with a crucial voice in the future of the college and has significantly enhanced student agency.

“Most significantly Damon assumed the role of acting headmaster for the majority of 2021.’’

Mr Casson said it was a “bittersweet’’ move, but he was pleased when colleagues moved on to opportunities that advanced their careers.

“This demonstrates that BBC is an institution that not only supports and nurtures its students, but also its staff,’’ he said.

“Moreover, it demonstrates that other significant schools in the region look to BBC when recruiting exceptionally talented staff.’’

Stuartholme School in Toowong is also in the process of selecting a new leader after Kristen Sharpe stepped down as principal in June due to health reasons.
