Police allege Aman, Kur, Manyang, Omot and Gebreysus “kicked, punched and stomped on” a 21-year-old man during the ambush at Acacia Ridge around 4.20pm on Sunday, while Rage was allegedly seen handing them baseball bats he retrieved from the boot of his car.
The group of men, described as an “armed gang” by Magistrate Stuart Shearer, allegedly used knives, bats and a hammer to threaten and beat the man, knocking him to the ground before a group of bystanders intervened and disarmed them.
The court heard a referee at the club successfully wrestled two knives from the hands of Kur, while Manyang allegedly wielded the hammer.
Phone footage allegedly shows one of the attackers fleeing the field and getting into Rage’s car, which crashes into another parked car in their hurried attempt to leave the scene.
The other men left in a separate car, which was later intercepted by police near Beatty Rd.
Each of the men are charged with one count each of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, going armed so as to cause fear and affray.
Manyang is listed in court documents as being the victim of a vicious gang attack in a Zillmere park last month, which left 19-year-old Girum Mekonnen dead and for which 12 men have been charged with murder, affray and at least 12 counts of acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm.
The court heard the altercation on Sunday began when Manyang approached the victim as he prepared to leave the sporting field, because he’d heard the victim was “looking for him”.
Manyang claimed the two talked, but he wasn’t involved in the attack.
“So the complainant just got smashed in the face with a hammer by an unknown person?” Mr Shearer said.
The victim was transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with facial injuries.
The Magistrate found the men posed an unacceptable risk of committing an offence and a risk to the community and their bail applications were refused.
Rage and Kur will appear via video link at the Richlands Magistrates Court on December 8 for committal mention.
Manyang and Gebreysus will appear via video link on December 9.
James Omot on will appear via video link on December 11.
