Man, 36, charged over homemade guns, ammunition

They were charged after knives, bats and a hammer were allegedly used to beat and threaten a man in a terrifying ordeal in Brisbane’s south on Sunday afternoon.

Brave bystanders tried to intervene after the group allegedly descended on a 21-year-old man at sporting fields off Mortimer Rd at Acacia Ridge about 4.20pm.

The man was preparing to leave when the men approached him.

Police say he got out of his car and walked away but was punched repeatedly by the five men.

A group of bystanders intervened, but the five then allegedly grabbed weapons from their car.

The victim was hit on the side of the head with a weapon before the bystanders disarmed the group, who then fled, police said.

The 21-year-old man was taken to hospital with Princess Alexandra Hospital with facial injuries.

Police spoke with witnesses and a short time later intercepted a car at nearby Beatty Rd, and five men were arrested.

The five men have all been charged with one count each of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, going armed so as to cause fear and affray.

They will appear in Richlands Magistrates Court this morning.

A police a spokeswoman on Monday told The Courier-Mail Sunday’s attack was “loosely associated” with the gang fight in Zillmere, however Liec Alapayo Manyang is listed in court documents as being the victim of charges of acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was one of the 13 people allegedly attacked with bats and knives at a Zillmere park that left 19-year-old Girum Mekonnen dead.

Twelve men aged 18 to 32 have each been charged with murder, affray and at least 12 counts of acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to the Zillmere attack.

They are all due to face court again later this month.
