A young girl has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after being hit by a car at a shopping centre car park on Brisbane’s southside.
Queensland Ambulance crews, including high acuity and critical care units, attended the scene of the vehicle and pedestrian incident at Fairfield Gardens shopping centre, off Fairfield Rd, at 1.10pm.
A female toddler was treated for what is believed to be serious leg and abdominal injuries.
She was later taken to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.
Her age is not yet known.
A worker at Carpe Diem coffee shop who had finished her shift and was walking to her car said she heard someone screaming before running over to the scene.
She said a car was on a zebra crossing, with the girl under the car.
“I saw the little one screaming in pain and her mother trying to tell her to calm down,’’ she said.
“She was bleeding from her mouth and had scratches on her face.’’
“I wished I could have lifted the car from her. Where is superman when we need him?’’
Some witnesses said the girl was holding her mother’s hand as they walked over the zebra crossing.
A shopper who called for an ambulance said “you could hear the child’s scream from a mile away’’.
Police were still on site an hour after the accident trying to have the car taken away.
One of its wheels had to be removed to help rescuers get the little girl out from underneath it.
