IT’S backs against the wall time for the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

Picked as an Intrust Super Cup premiership contender in the preseason, the Seagulls head into their away clash against the undefeated Townsville Blackhawks winless after four games.

Wynnum Manly are also coming off a 38-6 drubbing at the hands of the Redcliffe Dolphins in the first game of the Herald Cup at home on Sunday.

But coach Jon Buchanan said this weekend’s trip may have come at the perfect time.

“We do really enjoy getting away together as a team and we haven’t had a chance to do that so far this year,” he said.

“It’s probably good to get away from home for a bit just with the 25 players and staff who will travel.

“Hopefully that will help us come together and get better as a group.”

Wynnum Manly sit at the bottom of the ladder after three rounds and also face a 32 point deficit if they are to retain the Herald Cup after Sunday’s loss.

Faced with the possibility of four straight defeats to start their 2016 campaign with a match against last year’s runners-up ahead on Saturday, Buchanan said their defence was the main cause for concern.

“The resilience in defence just isn’t there at the moment,” he said.

“We’ve been giving up too many easy tries. We need to fix those areas if we are to turn things around because I believe everything will come from that.”
