UPSETS dominated the headlines for week two of the Intrust Super Cup finals as we edge closer to crowning premiers for the 2016 season.

The fairytale run continues for the Sunshine Coast Falcons, who are racking up the frequent flyer miles, after an eight-point win over the Townsville Blackhawks in north Queensland on Saturday.

Premiership favourites the Redcliffe Dolphins were then surprised by the Burleigh Bears, who used a 28-0 start to beat Adam Mogg’s side at Dolphin Oval.

SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS def TOWNSVILLE BLACKHAWKS 18-10 at Jack Manski Oval

ANOTHER week, another long road trip and another upset for the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

Craig Ingebrigtsen’s side are now within 80 minutes of football away from a spot in the Intrust Super Cup final after an 18-10 away win over the Townsville Blackhawks on Saturday.

After back-to-back trips to Papua New Guinea, the Falcons were flat to start the semi-final after the Blackhawks jumped out to an early lead through a try to Delouise Hoeter. But Sunshine Coast bounced back through Melbourne Storm contracted winger Ryan Morgan in the 15th minute.

Morgan scored his second try in the 36th minute to give the visitors the lead but Michael Parker-Walshe found the line just before the break to lead 10-8 at halftime.

From there, the Falcons defence took over as Townsville failed to score in the second half. Tries to Jye Ballinger and a third to Morgan helped the Sunshine Coast record another upset and progress another week to face Redcliffe in the preliminary final on Sunday.

Melbourne Storm contracted prop Felise Kaufusi was dominant in his return to the Sunshine Coast line up.

“We didn’t play that great but we played tough,” Falcons coach Ingebrigtsen said.

“Felise was a huge addition for us. I’ve coached him for five years now and know him inside and out. He always comes back with a great attitude and knows he has to play good footy to get back in the Storm team.”

But after travelling long distances for the past three weeks, Ingebrigtsen said he thought fatigue got the better of his team.

“I thought we’d be really flat and we were. I think that’s why we didn’t play our best but we gutted it out,” he said.

“Our warm up was flat, our team meeting was flat but we got through it. To think we’re now just 80 minutes away from a grand final is amazing.”

BURLEIGH BEARS def REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS 40-24 at Dolphin Oval

A LATE surge from the Redcliffe Dolphins at Dolphin Oval on Sunday was not enough to win the side an Intrust Super Cup grand final berth.

The Dolphins lost to Burleigh Bears 40-24, but have a second chance at the grand final against Sunshine Coast Falcons on Sunday.

Coach Adam Mogg said the Dolphins put in a “disappointing performance” and would need to step up against an in-form Falcons.

“We did our dash early in the game (giving the Bears a 28-0 head start),” Mogg said.

“We didn’t deserve to win ... we got what we deserved.”

Mogg said the side would knuckle down this week to give themselves the best chance against the “red hot Falcons”.

The Falcons beat Townsville Blackhawks 18-10 at Jack Manski Oval at the weekend.

“You don’t go to PNG and win and back-up against Townsville if you’re not in-form,” Mogg said.

“I’ve got belief in the team ... we finished minor premiers for a reason, but our standard of play will have to go up a few cogs to have any chance of winning.”

The winner of Sunday’s game at Dolphin Oval will face the Bears, in their first grand final since 2005, at Suncorp Stadium on September 25.
