As the GPS Basketball season starts to heat up, we have revealed our top teams so far in our first power rankings as well as the top players from the opening two rounds. SEE THE LISTS

We’re just two weeks into the GPS Basketball season for 2022 and already we have seen some teams separate themselves from the rest on top of several individuals shine on the court.

And following the opening two rounds, The Courier-Mail has revealed its team rankings as well as top 10 players so far this year.

Four teams still remain undefeated as the competition starts to heat up.

See our first power rankings for this season along with our top 10 players below.

GPS TEAM POWER RANKINGS

1. BRISBANE STATE HIGH SCHOOL

Dominant would be the word to describe how State High have come out of the gates this season.

After the disappointment of missing out on contending for the premiership in 2021 due to Covid-19, Kris Robinson’s team have come out firing winning their opening two games by a combined 97 points.

Despite the losses of Mason Amos, Xavier Chio and Jalen Blanchard, State High have established themselves as the early favourites and claim top spot on our first power rankings for the season following victories over Brisbane Grammar and BBC.

2. ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE, GREGORY TERRACE

They have had some rough patches in their first two games but even with some inconsistency, Terrace have fought through to record two 20-plus point wins to tip-off their campaign.

Matthew Hamilton-Smith’s side lost a bunch of key seniors from last year’s team and lost some significant size but as they embrace small ball, Terrace have outgunned Churchie in the season opener and BBC in their second match, both at home.

With Nazar Angallo still leading the team, alongside the likes of Paul Papacostas, Tama Tuhi and the Trego twins – Terrace are still a force to be reckoned with and claim second spot on our power rankings following their undefeated start.

3. TOOWOOMBA GRAMMAR

The early surprise of the season goes to Kabe Cicolini’s Toowoomba Grammar side.

Despite fielding a young team in 2022, Toowoomba are undefeated after the opening two games with impressive wins over Ipswich Grammar and Nudgee College, which was by a dominant 35 points.

Toowoomba are one of four undefeated sides in the competition and take third spot in our rankings but face their toughest test yet when they travel to the Gold Coast to take on TSS this round.

4. THE SOUTHPORT SCHOOL

Having only played one game, with the bye in the second round, Anthony Petrie’s TSS side fill out our top four.

In their only game this season, the defending CBSQ state champions, fought off a brave Nudgee College side to record a 106-91 victory, with new addition in Jaylen Pitman making some highlight plays along the way.

TSS come into the 2022 season as one of the favourites and will be a sure thing to move up the rankings in the coming weeks.

5. CHURCHIE

With a new coach, new players and younger talents stepping up, Churchie are finding their way this season.

Drew Summerfield’s team had an impressive bounce back in the second round, beating a tough Ipswich Grammar side after a 20-point loss to Terrace in their season opener.

Being led by new addition and sharpshooter Caleb Cronn, who is averaging 24 points per game to start his campaign, Churchie claim fifth spot in our rankings and face Nudgee College this weekend.

6. IPSWICH GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Just like dominant described the performances for State High, unlucky probably describes the start of the season the best for Ipswich Grammar.

Jason Ralph’s team have fought hard in both of their games so far in 2022 but have just fallen short in each contest.

Ipswich Grammar went down to Toowoomba Grammar 73-60 in the season opener, then lost 87-81 against Churchie in Round 2 in what was easily the game of the week.

Despite the losses, coach Ralph said he has been proud of his team’s efforts so far as they take sixth spot in the rankings.

7. BRISBANE BOYS’ COLLEGE

What a tough schedule to tip-off the season it has been for BBC.

Two rounds in and the team from Toowong has already faced two of the premiership contenders this year in State High and Terrace.

Despite heavy defeats against both teams, BBC have had their moments, especially in the first quarter against Terrace as they led the score going into the break.

BBC were also without one of their top talents in Emerson Juhasz in the second round and as their schedule becomes a bit lighter, Mike Ayenbadejo’s team will continue to improve, but for now they take seventh spot.

8. BRISBANE GRAMMAR

Brisbane Grammar have only played one game this season and it was against a red-hot State High outfit.

Coach Daniel George’s young team struggled against the premiership favourites and their schedule doesn’t get any easier as they take on Terrace this weekend.

But Grammar’s programs has shown signs of improvement in recent seasons and with young gun Lebron Brooks, who missed their first game, leading the way, alongside coach George and basketball director Michael Lake, that development will continue in 2022.

9. ST JOSEPH’S NUDGEE COLLEGE

Probably unlucky to sit in ninth spot on our first rankings for the season after fighting hard against TSS in the opening round is Nudgee College.

One of four teams without a win after two games, Nudgee pushed a talented TSS at home in Round 1 before a 35-point loss to Toowoomba Grammar last week.

Another school boasting a young side, Nudgee will be a team looking to improve as the weeks progress.
