NBL1 talents, national champions and even new coaches taking their spot on the bench – hype for the 2022 GPS basketball season is reaching fever pitch.

After no premiership winner last year when a portion of the season was cut due to Covid-19 lockdowns, schools are hungry to add another title to their trophy cabinet.

While teams finalise preparations during school holidays, the new campaign will tip-off on July 16, so we have decided to reveal just which names and talents will line up for which schools for the upcoming season.

See the squad lists below:

ANGLICAN CHURCH GRAMMAR SCHOOL (CHURCHIE)

Caleb Cronn, Isaac Cordell, Mackenzie Jolly, Thomas Joy, Quinn Lambert, Kallen Mattsson, Jake Miles-Wrency, Kurt Siwek, Edward Storen, Jensen Taafe

Director of Basketball, Aaron Harding: “The Churchie First V is looking forward to a full season after the interrupted 2021 campaign. With CJ Bruton moving to the head coaching role with the Adelaide 36ers after the 2021 season, Drew Summerfield has taken the role. Seniors Quinn Lambert, Tom Joy and Isaac Cordell, along with returning Year 11s in Jake Miles-Wrency and MacKenzie Jolly have gelled well across the pre-season with a strong contingent of Year 10 and 11 boys debuting for the First V this season. Term 2 games against a number of GPS and CBSQ Division 1 schools, as well as some older competition from our Old Boys and QSL opposition has seen a steady progress on and off the court for the group. Belief in the team is high as they try to emulate the back-to-back premierships attained by our boys in the last two full seasons in 2020 and 2021. The team and the wider program cannot wait to get started with Round 1 against Gregory Terrace.”

BRISBANE BOYS’ COLLEGE

Jared Gluch (c), Sebastian Heyes, Javen D’Souza, Joshua Campbell, Joseph Newell, Lenny Tune, Lachlan Scroggie, Ethan Calvert, Cooper Bell, Ryan Sui, William Cohn, Emerson Juhasz, Daniel Graham, Lee Van Der Westhuizen, Charles Hinson

Director of Basketball, David Bennett: “Returning some hardened seniors from previous campaigns, who will lead the young talented group under them. Returning with coach Ayanbadejo, we are looking to make our mark and hopefully an upset along the way.”

First V coach, Kris Robinson: “After two years of dealing with pandemic ramifications, our squad is headlined by a senior class that is yet to experience the cauldron of GPS games with full crowds, so they’re very much looking forward to that aspect of this season. Many of our players have been very busy throughout the pre-season with senior and representative teams, but most of our core from last year is returning, so we should hit the ground running and be competitive.”

IPSWICH GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Lachlan Bell, Xaviah Bricknell-Lehmann, Fletcher Doyle, Sidney Keith, Sheldon Moore, James Pearson, Zachary Shegog, Jacob Younan, Bergeah Darmechoul, Trent Dowell, Harrison

First V coach, Jason Ralph: “A relatively new group this year, after losing 9 seniors last year. It’s going to be an exciting year as we will see which boys are ready to take that next jump. We have Seniors that are ready for a big year, as well as some up and coming talent that are searching for their opportunity. Our goal is always to make the top three for GPS and see where that takes us.”

ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE, GREGORY TERRACE

Nazar Angallo, Tama Tuhi, Nick French, Daniel Ola, Luca Pulvirenti, Sean Callinan, Phoenix Trego, Hunter Trego, Paul Papacostas, Jacob Shaw, Ethan Sun, Archie Marshall, Corey Laffan, Logan Siolo, Will McDonald, Denver Loli

First V coach, Matthew Hamilton-Smith: “The First V Program at Terrace has undertaken a huge overhaul from past years on the back of losing eight squad members from 2021. We are a much less experienced team in 2022 and have had to learn a new playing style on both sides of the ball due to the personnel in the group. Like most programs, we have had a disrupted pre-season with illness, injury and absence impacting our core playing group. I am however confident that we will play an exciting brand of basketball and put a team on the court each week that will be very competitive.”

ST JOSEPH’S NUDGEE COLLEGE

Finn Carey, Ryan Wedmaier, Nate Scott, Oliver Langton, Lachlan Caldwell, Eaun Halliday, Mladen Markovic, Joaquin Tulloch, Wade Lucas, Kurt Lucas, Tyson Warren, Spencer Schmidt, Rylan Carlisle, Nicholas Fernadez-Pembroke

Basketball director, CJ Massingale: “Nate Scott, Joaquinn Tulloch and Mladen Markovic are the returning core from 2021. With a couple of young talent coming through, led by Year 10 Tyson Warren, 2022 will serve as a building year towards a bright future. Although this will be a challenging year for the group, expect Nate Scott to fill up the scoresheets.”

TOOWOOMBA GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Rufaro Zimbwa, James Nugent, Rahul Captain, Samuel Geu, Arok Arok, Tyler Saal, Theo Hess, Aidan Goddard-Smith, Tawana Ngorima, Marcus Szeto, Harry Skobe, Joseph Mayers

First V coach and basketball director, Kabe Cicolini: “After graduating seven seniors last year, the Toowoomba Grammar School 1st V is looking to rebuild with a young core and two seniors within the training group. Samuel Geu returns as the only rotation player from 2021 and new captain Rufaro Zimbwa, James Nugent and Rahul Captain will be asked to step up and take on big minutes. The boys have worked hard during the pre-season with a focus on individual player development and competitive mindset. As a coaching staff, we are extremely pleased with the rapid learning curve and the willingness of the boys to embrace an ‘empty the tank’ mindset. We look forward to playing a free-flowing brand of basketball and competing in what is only becoming a stronger league with every year.”

THE SOUTHPORT SCHOOL

TJ Ambrose, Cayden Brown, James Burdett, Ethan Coffey, Indy Cotton, Xavier Eddington, Jack Foley, Mali Hodzic, Nikos Karathanasopoulos, Josh Kelly, Jackson McCabe, Callum O’Connor, Will Pickett, Jaylen Pitman, Sam Street, Ben Tweedy, Angus Wilkie

First V coach, Anthony Petrie: “Really excited for the season with this group. We only have one returning player from last year so it has been fun starting with a new and fresh group. They have been training hard, listening and competing so we can’t ask anymore from them than that. Great group of young men who are always a pleasure to be around who are trying to carry on the standards of what our program means and stands for.”

BRISBANE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Alex Roe, Austen Harry, Ben Balthes (captain), Brendan Cheng, Daniel Jesser, George Mercer, Jacob Fox, James Eccleston, Lachlan Curtin, LeBron Brooks, Marcus Forbes, Max Balthes, Nicholas Yang, Nick Teng, Otto Dwyer, Toby Choi
