Southeast Qld’s top young basketballers: Scorers ranked across u16 competitions

Almost 800 young athletes have hit the court in Basketball Queensland’s Under-16s SQJBC competitions this season, we’ve sorted the stats across every division. SEE WHERE THEY RANK

Almost 800 young athletes have taken to the court in the Basketball Queensland Under-16s South Queensland Basketball Championships (SQJBC) competition and as we head in to the state championships The Courier-Mail has revealed the top offensive weapons across all divisions.

After the regular season came to an end with the finals at the weekend, as the Gold Coast Rollers and Logan Thunder captured the premier league gold medals, we have compiled a list ranking every player across the age group.

Featuring both girls and boys divisions from premier league (division one) to development cup (division four), the list is ranked from the player with the most total points from the SQJBC season.

But the list also features each player’s average, three-point and two-point field goals made as well as total free-throws made.

North Gold Coast Seahawk Mahir Mali Hodzic leads the way with 342 points across 12 games in the Under-16 Boys Southern Cup division, where he scored at an average of 28.5 points per game, hitting 18 three-pointers along the way.

Hodzic’s form completes an impressive comeback after he suffered a serious arm injury recently.

Northside Wizards young gun Antonio Rees took second place with 300 points in the Under-16 Boys Challenge Cup division, scoring at an average of 23.08 points per game.

Gold medal winner Vahayliah Seumanutafa is the only girls player in the top five, taking third place after scoring 296 points for the undefeated Thunder in the Under-16 Girls Premier League division, doing it at an average of 24.67 points per game.

Northside Wizard Bo Turnbull was fourth with 281 points in the Boys Development Cup competition, while Sunshine Coast Phoenix’s Cooper Wilson was fifth with 279 points in the Boys Southern Cup division.

Gold Coast Rollers young star Indy Cotton was the player with the highest scoring average in the SQJBC at 28.78 points per game, including 51 points in his side’s Boys Premier League grand final victory over RedCity.

Southern Districts Spartans guard Isabella Mirkovic (Girls Premier League) hit the most threes from all the divisions, connecting on 33 shots from beyond the arc to lead Zach McDowell-White from RedCity Roar (Boys Premier League) with 31.

Hannah Broadhurst from the Northside Wizards (Girls Challenge Cup) made the most free-throws with 47 makes from 12 games.

The Basketball Queensland Under-16 State Championships tip-off next month with the boys tournament hosted by the North Gold Coast Seahawks from April 7-10 and the girls tournament hosted by Toowoomba Basketball from April 12-15.
