SEQ’s top school sports – 600 of the best grassroots talents

From Ash Barty to Susie O’Neill and Wally Lewis, South East Queensland’s sporting catchments have already produced some of the greats. Check out 600 up-and-coming local sports stars to keep an eye on.

It is one of the world’s great sporting catchments, the Brisbane, Moreton, Logan and Ipswich catchments which have produced champions left, right and centre..

From Ash Barty to Susie O’Neill, John Eales to Wally Lewis and all the greats in between, this region of Queensland is as fertile as any, anywhere.

Queensland could host the Olympic Games 2032 and fill the Aussie team with Queenslanders from this region alone, and still be competitive.

Today we present the names of more than 550 students who in the last 12 months have been high achievers in their chosen sports.

Vianne Stillman and Sophie Freier: The sporting rich bayside school features these two fabulous Australian rules football talents, both of whom are Met North representatives.

Montannah Fabian and Ethan Stackelberg: Both students were Australian rules Met North representatives.

Maddyn Allison: Allison is a Queensland Little Athletics silver medallist in high jump following the 2021 national track and field championships.

Jessica Mikitis and Chloe Edwards: The hard working Mikitis is a QAS development squad swimmer and Met North representative, while Edwards is a Met North representative.

Ethan Topp: In the growing sport of water polo, Topp is a Queensland under 19 water polo and Met North representative.

Grace Commons: Commons is an outstanding local squash player who represents at Met North level.

William Hockey: His name may be Hockey but he is at his sporting best in the pool where this excellent young swimmer represents at Met North carnivals.

Yvette Boyama: Boyama is a Queensland Tae Kwon Do representative.

REDCLIFFE SHS

Daniel Harlow: Harlow is an outstanding athlete, specialising in the demanding heptathlon where he is the national champion

Jayde Herdegen: Jot this name down. Herdegan will be one of the women’s rugby league players to watch in the future. The youngster is a Queensland representative and Brisbane Broncos squad member.

Jaden Weir: Weier is a Queensland water polo representative.

Wil Berrigan and Siai Papani: Rugby league has a rich tradition at Redcliffe SHS and both boys were upholding the tradition after making junior Queensland rugby league teams in 2021.

Madison Lyon: Redcliffe born and bred, the Sandgate Squash Centre junior is an Australian squash representative.

ST EDMUND’S COLLEGE, IPSWICH

Julian Cruice: Sporting rich Ipswich has not shortage of talent and one really good one is the bounding Cruice who was a 5 years Queensland representative in Australian football.

Koen Miller: With sharp reflexes and a great leap, Miller is a 15 years Queensland representative in volleyball and beach volleyball

Larry Siala: Yet another rugby code talent, Siala is a 16 years Queensland rugby union representative.

Tafito Falaniko Ah-Ki: Ah-Ki made his mark in 2021 when he joined school mate Siala, see above, as a 16 years Queensland rugby union team.

ALEXANDRA HILLS TATE HIGH SCHOOL

If you are looking for outstanding young sporting achievers in the south east Queensland region, then take a peek at some of these achievements by Alexandra Hills SHS students.

Cooper Hersom: A Wynnum-Manly Seagulls Meninga Cup rugby league player, Hersom is also a Met East under 15 rugby league representative.

Caden Frame and Cooper Benvenuti: Both boys had earned positions in the very competitive Connell Challenge rugby league competition, with Frame playing for Wynnum Manly and Benvenuti in Lote Tuqiri-coached Brisbane Tigers (formerly Easts). Frame was this week named in our Connell Challenge Team of the Week for his performance for Wynnum against Burleigh Bears.

Nathan Phelps: Year 7 student Phelps had the honour of being the Struddy’s Cup Player of the Year in last season’s rugby league season.

Sienna Maze: Maze is school aerobics national level athlete.

Demi McGregor: McGregor is an outstanding all around sport, representing Met East in softball while playing for Bayside in Futsal.

Damian Gardner: Garden has played his way into the Metropolitan East Baseball team

Charlyse Eustace: Eustace is both a Metropolitan East rugby league representative and a Bayside soccer team selection.

Ethan Albury and Cooper Joseph: Albury and Joseph are both Metropolitan East Australian football representatives.

ANGLICAN CHURCH GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Oliver Crum: A Year 9 basketball player, he has made the Queensland under 15 Emerging Team (QLD South)

Sravan Renjith: Renjith is a Year 9 chess ace who was the 2020 Queensland blitz champion and tied for second place at nationals (Australian 2020 Juniors Under 18 Fide Open); Board 1 in Churchie Premier Chess team that is currently holding premierships at GPS, state and national level.

Jack Love: A Year 10 athletics Queensland champion in the under 17 hurdles, he will be competing at the upcoming 2022 nationals.

Nick Mattiske: Mattiske is a Year 10 student who made the Water Polo Queensland under 14 gold squad.

Luka Sazdov: Sazdov is both an indoor and outstanding volleyball talent. The Year 10 student is a Queensland representative in both, and a QAS athlete.

Cooper Sharpe: Another excellent Year 10 volleyball athlete who has made the MET East representative side. He is also a Firsts player in Year 10

William Shepherd-Smith: Shepherd-Smith is coming off a gold medal rush at the recent GPS swimming championship. The Year 10 student has qualified for the nationals in 11 events and at last year’s state titles he claimed one gold, seven silver and one bronze medal.

Kurt Siwek: The Year 10 basketball player was a member of the gold medal winning team (Qld South) at the 2021 under 16 national championships. He is also a part of the National Performance Program squad.

Joel Humphrey: Humphrey (Year 11) has been selected in the 2022 Queensland School Sport White Triathlon Team

Jake Miles-Wrency: Another excellent basketballer, Year 11 student Miles-Wrency is a under 16 Queensland representative and a gold medal winner at the 2021 national championships. He is also a national performance program squad member

Thomas Pattison: The Year 11 swimmer is a national finalist and the 2021 state champion in the 15 years age group in four events.

Jack Ryan: A First XI player, Year 11 student Ryan is a Queensland under 19 schoolboys team member.

Lachlan Cornelius: Cornelius (Year 12) is the 2021 Australian champion under 18 athletics champion for the 1500m. In 2019 he was also the Australian cross country champion (under 16) for the 4000m.

Rory Easton: A Year 12 student, Easton was third at the 2022 state championships as an under 20 200m runner. He was also a part of two under 18 club relay teams late last year, breaking the Queensland and Australian records in the 4x200m, and also the Queensland record in the 4x100m. All relay team members attend Brisbane GPS Schools

Archie Ridgway: Ridgway (Year 12) is an athletics state champion and national medallist in 1500m and 3000m.

Ben Waugh: The Year 12 student has been named captain of the Queensland Tennis Team to compete at Australian Championships in August 2022.

CAPALABA STATE COLLEGE

Whyatt Kelly: Kelly is a sporting all-rounder who is a member of the district cross country team, the district athletics team and is a member of the college volleyball team.

Hayley and Kobe Mcdowell White: From a very well known Queensland sporting family, Hayley is a district, regional and Queensland schoolgirls basketball team representative. Kobe mirrors his sister, while also making the Redcity Roar basketball team in the NBL1 men’s team.

Hayley Roberts: Roberts is both a district and regional volleyball team member.

Brock Renouf: The multi-talented Renouf plays for the district and regional teams, represents his school in the athletics and cross country teams, and is a member of the college basketball team.

SOUTHERN CROSS CATHOLIC COLLEGE

Harrison Lee: Lee is a national gymnast

Paddy McLoughlin: Paddy is an outstanding softball and baseball under 13 player who can play as high as the under 19 age group, such is the rookie’s ability.

Zoe Wright: Wright is an elite swimmer who qualified for 10 events to attend the Sunshine Coast Regional swim trials.

VICTORIA POINT SHS

Fanolele Tu’itahi and Kiara Tolley: Tolley and Tu’iahi are both Queensland Australian football representatives.

Kobey Maguire: Maguire is a high achieving bayside cricketer who is a Queensland representative.

Talan Cross: Blink and you might miss this Queensland OzTag representative

Jett Green: Green is a real all-rounder who is a Met East region AFL, surfing and triathlon representative.

Lily Beveridge, Lily Taylor and Lucy Arklay: This terrific footy trio were all Met East Australian rules football representatives.

IONA COLLEGE

Ben Goedemans: A national and state medallist in 400m and 800m freestyle who starred in a high class field at the recent AIC swimming championships.

Sean Moroney: Moroney is an AIS emerging athlete in multiclass track and field.

Aden Biddle: Biddle is a Queensland schools 12 years golf talent.

MT ALVERNIA COLLEGE

Cara Dineen: Watch for Dineen to make her mark playing basketball in NBL1 for the Northside Wizards team.

Airlie Davis: The big hearted Davis is a Para swimming (S14) backstroker.

Jemma Keefe: Keefe is frankly one of little athletics finest, having been a regular podium finisher at state and national titles over the years. Her current disciplines within the Queensland Athletics were as a javelin and discus thrower.

Paris Hanna, Matilda Robson, Maggie Anderson: The girls were all Australian futsal team selections in their respective age groups – Hanna and Robson in the under 16s and Anderson in the under 14s.

Jessica Bartholomew: Jessica is a Queensland Gymnastics Border Challenge Team member.

Ruby Ingle: The talented Ingle is a Queensland Gymnastics Team member.

Lisa Gardiner: Meet Lisa Gardner, an Australian squad member for acrobatic gymnastics.

Sophie Lilley: Sophie Lilly is a Queensland indoor cricket team member.

Mia Newbold, Sophia Papantoniou and Shanelle James: This terrific trio are all Queensland under 15 team members.

Prestyn Laine-Sietu: Sietu was the 14-15s Player of the Carnival at last year’s QRSSL carnival. He is the Redcliffe league Connell Challenge captain this season.

Ruby Price and Cooper Punch: Price and Punch, who comes from well known hockey achieving family, were both Queensland Hockey representative players.

Azariah Tuala: Tuala is a Queensland discus champion

Hector Langkilde: Langkilde is a Queensland swimming representative.

Ben Uini: Uini is a Queensland rugby league representative who plays as a strong ball carrying middle forward.

Robertson Tusi Tofu: Look out for this Queensland rugby league representative.

SHAILER PARK SHS

Zoe Seymour: The school’s futsal academy student participated in a number of national club championships across the under 13, 14 and 15 age group representative teams. As a result of her performances Seymour has been selected for two international tours, one in the United Kingdom and another to New Zealand later this year.

Luke Edmunds: A footy ace, Edmunds has been accepted to attend the Gold Coast Suns Academy.

Ryan McIntosh and Jacob McSwain: The students were district AFL representatives in a hot field of talent.

Leo Dang: Dang has been doing the Shailer Park community proud with big efforts as a district swimming representative.

LOGANLEA SHS

Taj Kelly: Kelly is an athlete with a big motor, representing Queensland as cross country runner.

Benjamin Marsden: Marsden is a Met East cricket representative.

Davina Hohepa and Merci Norton: In an extremely competitive sporting environment, Norton and Hohepa were both Met East rugby league representatives.

ST PETERS LUTHERAN COLLEGE (Springfield campus)

Mollie O’Callaghan: O’Callaghan is a triple Olympic medallist who was a member of the Australian 4x200, 4x100 freestyle and 4x100m medley swimming squads which claimed either gold or bronze at the Tokyo Games.

Ella Ramsay: Ramsay is an elite Australian swimming junior who has won so many medals in All Ages group Queensland and Australian swimming carnivals over the years, she’d be worth a fortune in gold.

Torrie Lewis: The top flight national sprinter is now a contender for a Commonwealth Games sprint berth. Although she is fast over the 200m, her best event is the 100m (11.33 seconds). Last weekend her relay team of Ella Connolly, Bree Basters and Mia Gross also stalked the Australian 4x100m relay record.

Amelia Weber: It is not every day you break the record of one of our finest swimming champions, but that is what Weber did in surpassing Hayley Lewis recently. This month she had the privilege of breaking the 16 years Brisbane Met record 400m in a time of 4:13.53 – going past Lewis’ 1990 time of 4:16.55.

Josh Staples: The St Peters Lutheran College AIC co-captain is a world junior championship merit team selection.

Gabrielle Schmidt: Schmidt is a leading distance runner for her age group and will be competing at this weekend’s national championships in Sydney.

Rob Thorpe: Thorpe has been selected in the junior Dolphins team to represent Australia at the World Junior Open Water Championships in Seychelles.

Nick Nankervis: Nankervis was the co-captain of the St Peters Lutheran College team which claimed the AIC swimming championship – again

Hugh Dolle: Dolle played a huge role in St Peters Lutheran College claiming its sixth successive AIC senior swimming championship.

Toby Stolberg: From the St Peters Springfield campus, this exciting high jumper has produced a world junior team qualifying performance with a jump of 1.82m. Toby is undefeated in QGSSSA high jumping.

Kadin Pritchard: A Queensland Reds Junior Academy member, Pritchard is a strong footballer with leadership qualities from the Springfield campus of St Peters.

Curtis Beevers: Beevers led the AIC school First XI cricket side with both bat and ball and in the field.

Jamie Perkins: Perkins is a swimming young gun who will medal at the All Age Nationals next month.

Jaclyn Barclay: Another of St Peters exciting crop of swimming rookies pouring through the ranks. She is a top notch talent.

Isabella Morris: Morris claimed a 14 years 50m freestyle record at the recent QGSSSA meet previously held by Olympian Maddie Groves – a St Peters Old Scholar.

Semra Olowoniyi and Claveria Johnson-Tiumalu: The girls shone like beacons at the recent QGSSSA swim meet.

ST AIDAN’S ANGLICAN GIRLS’ SCHOOL

Angelina Tignani: – Angelina is the current under 20 Javelin State Champion. She will be travelling to Sydney at the end of the month to compete at the Australian Track & Field Championships where she is looking to maintain her national champion status for a fifth consecutive year.

Tayla Sykes: Tayla is a brilliant multi-sport athlete competing at elite levels in Rugby 7s and Touch Football. She is a member of the Queensland Academy of Sport Rugby 7s program and recently made her debut in the Queensland 7s team against NSW. Tayla is also a member of the Australian under 18 National Youth Squad for Touch Football and was named Player of the Tournament at the 2021 Touch Football Australia U18 National Youth Championships.

Rhani Hagan – Rhani is a talented Touch Footballer having been named in the Queensland U15 Merit Team following the Queensland School Sport State Championships in 2021. Not only that, Rhani is also the current under 17 state champion in 100m and will be travelling to Sydney at the end of the month to compete at the Australian Track & Field Championships.

Zara Hagan – Zara is the reigning National Champion in the under 15 100m. Her recent performance at the Queensland Athletics State Championship winning the under 16 100m and 200m events, holds her in good stead to defend her title at this month’s Australian Track & Field Championships. Much like her sister Rhani, Zara is a talented Touch Footballer and was named in the Queensland under 15 Merit Team following the Queensland School Sport State Championships in 2021.

Georgina West: Georgina was an integral member of the Queensland Hockey under 18 team which won the 2021 National Championships. She was also named Player of the Tournament at the Queensland School Sport under 19 hockey state championships in 2021. Her performances on the pitch have seen Georgina added to the Queensland Academy of Sport Hockey program as well as the Hockey Australia Women’s Future (U18) Talent Squad.

Jazelle Carter – Jazelle is also a multi-sport athlete competing at representative level in both Track & Field and Hockey. Jazelle is the reigning U16 800m National Champion and will travel to Sydney later this month to defend her title at the Australian Track & Field Championships. Following the 2021 Queensland School Sport State Hockey Championships, Jazelle was named in the U16 Merit team.

Bridget McCormack and Isabella Valinoti: Both Bridget and Isabella have been named in the Queensland School Sport Triathlon Team to compete at School Sport Australia National Championships in Hervey Bay in September. Bridget is also the current state champion in the under 20 800m and will travel to Sydney to compete at the Australian Track & Field Championships.

Emma-Kate Watt, Jemima Bennett, Layla Pennisi and Rebecca Teahan: Following strong performances at the recent Queensland Athletics State Championships, Emma-Kate (U20 3000m Steeplechase), Jemima (U17 800m), Layla (U14 800m) and Rebecca (U16 3000m Race Walk), along with many of the girls mentioned above, will be travelling to Sydney in late March to compete at the Australian Track & Field Championships.

BRISBANE STATE HIGH SCHOOL

Taafili Taoso: Taoso is a BSHS who made her senior water polo debut representing Queensland Thunder as a 16-year-old in the AWL last month. The centre forward has been a regular on the score sheet when she plays.

Joshua Conias: Conias broke the AIC 50m freestyle in his age group at this month’s GPS swimming championship.

Hannah Allan: Allan is an exciting swimming sprinter who is a regular on podiums – from nationals to school meets.

Joe Saunders: Endurance athlete Saunders is a young gun who recently broke Queensland 2000km steeplechase record in the under 17 years age group.

Joel Templin: Templin is an elite young athlete in decathlon.

Georgie Gilroy: Middle distance exponent Gilroy just keeps passing milestones. Her 1500m time (4min:26 secs) is now of world junior championship qualifying standard.

Isla and Gwen Watson: The girls were Queensland representatives in swimming, athletics, cross country and triathlon. Relative newcomers to triathlon who are still working on their cycling, Isla was second in state titles as a senior and Gwen was third.

Sarah Birchall: Sarah is an all-rounder sportswoman, specialising in football (soccer). She has been a part of the open’s football team since she arrived at the BSHS in grade 7. During her time at State High, she has won two premierships with the Open team, and helped BSHS to the state championship Bill Turner Cup title. Outside of school, Sarah plays in the WNPL with Olympic, was a part of the QAS team in 2021, and was short-listed for the Junior Matildas. State High is lucky to have such a talented athlete, true leader, and great person as part of our football program.

Sophie Malcolm: Malcolm is an elite young rower from BSHS who last year claimed gold and silver medals at the Australian Rowing Championships.

MILTON STATE SCHOOL

Lilja Jonsdottir: Look out for this young achiever in triathlon. She is a Queensland School Sport Aquathlon Team Member 2022 and Queensland School Sport State Cross Country Championship runner (3km)

Lachlan Andriske: Andriske is a Queensland School Sport State Swimming Titles representative in the 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle.

Cal Fischer: Fischer was a Metropolitan North Australian football player at state AFL championships 2021.

Riley O’Shea, Alexandra Wills and Lucille Bryant: Milton State School was where former Australian world swimming championship silver medallist Minna Atherton learned to swim and now the school has this trio coming through the ranks. O’Shea (50, 100m butterfly), Wills (50m, 100m freestyle) and Lucille Bryant (50m backstroke) were Queensland School Sport State Swimming title representatives.

GENESIS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE:

Matthew Turner: Turner is a Queensland state aquathlon team member.

William Macintosh: Macintosh has a big motor in a gruelling sport (triathlon) and is now a Queensland team representative.

CANNON HILL ANGLICAN COLLEGE

Amelia Fisk: Fisk is a cross country and touch football representative.

Charlotte Hansen: Hansen is a national swimming bronze medallist.

Zak Myles-Hawkins: Myles-Hawkins joins Fisk as an outstanding performer in the gruelling cross country where he is a Queensland representative.

Lina Mueller: The youngster is a Queensland volleyball player

Zali Campbell, Harry Orford, Tayah Woods and Ruby Samson-Wood: The college has an array of eye-catching football talents including Zali Campbell, Roar Academy player Harry Orford, Tayah Woods and Ruby Samson-Wood.

Violet Johnson: Johnson is a Queensland basketball representative.

Ruby Owen: Watch for Owen representing Metropolitan East in tennis.

Toby Chippendale: Chippendale is an endurance specialist, a Queensland representative in both cross country and the demanding steeplechase.

Luka Routledge: The student is a Queensland sprint champion in swimming.

Callie Bannister: Bannister is an international Judo exponent.

CHAC also has three swimmers competing at the school state titles. The increasingly impressive Zoe Ammundsen just broke the 50m backstroke state record in her age group, while Emma Milner swam a National qualifying time. Liam Simmons won gold in the Met East relay team.

ST JOSEPH’S GREGORY TERRACE

Jack Moore: Butterfly swimmer Moore is the 2021 state champion for 14 years in both the 50m and 100m butterfly, and was a strong performance at the recent AIC championship.

Felix Wilson: Wilson is a real racer who is the reigning state champion in the 16 years age group for 50m breaststroke and was a 100m breaststroke silver medallist. He is also the 15 years 50m breaststroke state record holder.

Ike Martinez: The college which brought the swimming world Tokyo Olympian Tom Neill (bronze medal, 4x200m freestyle) now has Martinez as a national age champion in the 100m and 200m butterfly, the 200 IM and the400m and 800m freestyle. He is also a national silver medallist in the 200m freestyle and a 100m freestyle bronze medallist. Martinez is also an Australian Age Record holder for the 13 years 200m butterfly.

Brittany Else: Else is an outstanding golfer who competed at the Junior Masters, finishing fifth, after earlier winning the Gailes Junior Club Championship. She is also a 2022 Met West Representative in the 17 years age group.

Sophie Martin: Martin was the leader of the pack during St Margaret’s blazing second place finish at the recent QGSSSA swimming championships. Martin is a state titles 16 years IM winner and current freestyle 15 years at the Australian Age Championships holder. Her sister Isabella is also a state and national podium finisher who claimed the 100m butterfly at the QGSSSA meet.

Chelsea Johnson: The promising water polo junior broke into the Australian Water Polo League competition as a guest player for the Newcastle team. She is a multi national champion with her club Mermaids and has been identified by Australian selectors as a player of the future.

Tia Kiley, Kiley, Adelaide Bothwell, Mena Bertinato and Adel Kusztoris are part of an exciting crop of 50m freestyle sprinters who blazed to sensational victories at the recent QGSSSA championship. Other high achievers at the QGSSSA meet were Sienna Timms, Anna Lincoln, Abigail Anderson and Ruby Gowns.

Ashley Blackman: High jump, long jump, 100m and relay runner who is the Queensland State High Jump champion and 2021 Australian high jump bronze Medalist in under 14 Division.

Bless Daly: Daly is a sporting all around athlete who competes at javelin, discus, shot

put, as well as being a 2021 Queensland waterpolo representative and Queensland hockey player. She also helped St Marg’s win its BWPI water polo grand final on Saturday.

Ebony Okonkwo: Ebony is a 100m, 200m, long jump and relay athlete who is a state and national sprint medallist in 100m and 200m.

Milla Roberts will run sprints and middle distance, but comes into her own in the longer event. She was third in the 2000m steeplechase.

Isabella Harte: Harte is an elite national 1500m, 3000m and 800m runner who always medals, and recently claimed gold 4000m at the Queensland Athletics State Cross Country championship.

Daisy Brown: Brown is an outstanding thrower in athletics, but was also included in the 2021 Junior Matilda’s Squad and QAS Football Queensland program.

Lucy Bourke: Another sprinter and field thrower, Bourke also excels on the cricket field, representing Queensland in 2021. She is also a part of the Queensland Academy of Sport and under 17 Rugby7’s squad.

Rory Owen: Owen was the state 2020 200m and 400m champion and performs strongly over 100m, 400m and 800 - and at the state relay meets.

Addison Houslip: In the 13 years age group, Houslip is an elite athlete - in and out of the water. She is the Queensland State Triathlon Champion of 2021-22 and also the State Cross Country Champion (2021). But in the pool, at Queensland, Australian All Age or QGSSSA meets, she is always in finals and often on the podium.

Cosette Cookes: An All Ages Australian Championship swimmer, Cookes had a huge 2021 in the 13 years age groups, finishing third in the 50m freestyle (27.57) and third in the 200m freestyle at the states, then at the Queensland School Sport Swimming Championships finishing first (50m freestyle) and third (100m freestyle).

ASHGROVE STATE SCHOOL

Ellie Hicks: Swimmer Hicks is a Queensland team selection for the year 10-12 age groups.

Cooper Stuart and Sebastian Croke: Stuart and Croke are Australian football Metropolitan North representatives.

Zelmari Van Loggenberg: Van Loggenberg is an all-rounder who has made Metropolitan North teams as both a hockey and cross country representative.

Brooke Marchant: Marchant has a long list of netball achievements, having been named in the QSS representative team, as well as in the Queensland merit side and also the Queensland School Sport south coast Netball team.

Ava Gaske: Another highly successful swimmer, Gaske has accumulated some amazing results in the water after participating in the state swimming championships and being chosen in the national championship team.

Having watched Yeronga Park SHS alumni Mabior Chol rise to play AFL with Richmond and the Suns, young sports at Yeronga SHS were also striving for excellence.

Harry Curness: A Metropolitan West Touch Football representative and Broncos Youth Academy member.

Hayden Cahill: Cahill performed strongly representing his school as a Met West swimming representative.

Aiden Yoshida: Eye-catching rugby union talent from the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union representatives ranks. He was a member of the state championship winning BJRU team last season.

CLAYFIELD COLLEGE

Clayfield College

Clayfield College’s rich sporting tradition continues in earnest across a variety of sports.

Meghan Guthrie-Quinn and Tiana Kritzinger are both national swimming champions, with Kritzinger a world junior swimming championship merit selection.

Laura Poon and Mali Schwarz were both state swimming champions, while Poppy Stephen shines in both still and surf water. Stephen is a national swim champion but also a surf lifesaving champion.

Clayfield College was flooding the gymnastic arenas with thrilling high achievers, including national champions Christina Anictomatis, Isabella Mcdonnell-Baum, Eleanor Myers, Sachi Smith, Grace Webb and Lindsay Webb.

In the boom sport of football, both Jacqueline Buchanan and Chloe Wilkins were National Premier League players.

In netball, Hayley Mcgruther has reached national squad player status, while Ella Wilkins and Skye Wilkins were netball state squad members.

When it came to cricket and softball, Abby Harris and Allegra Pollack were state squad cricketers, and Jacqueline Buchanan and Allegra Pollack both softball state champions.

Mackenzie Nielsen: Nielsen has been identified by the QAS where she plays open age and is in the Future Matildas program

Jonti Fisher: Fisher is another outstanding young footballer who plays for QAS Open age group and has been included in a Future Matildas squad.

Harry Takis: Takis has been in rare form. A State golfer playing handicap +5, he has just won the Adidas Junior 6s Tour. The national winner was awarded at Woodlands Golf Course, Melbourne, this month.

ST LAURENCE’S COLLEGE

Nathan Taverner: Taverner will enter the national track and field championships starting on Saturday currently ranked top three in Australia for under 18 triple jump and 110m hurdles.

Jaydon Macaulay: Aged just 15, Macaulay has been included in the Lions Academy Level 3 Boys squad reserved for under 19 players. That is a huge endorsement for young Macaulay.

Jake Kurbatoff: The 2021 AIC First XV rugby championship have a smokey in their ranks in Kurbatoff: But the twist is Kurbatoff is also a member of the First XVIII AFL side and has been incredible as a key position player. He has a bright future in multiple sports.

Mikael Ibrahim: A member of Laurie’s First XV premiership winning team, he is a Reds Junior Academy player but also an outstanding rugby league player with the Brisbane Tigers Mal Meninga Cup side.

Ethan Connelly: An outstanding tennis player, the 14-year-old is ranked in the top 10 in Australia for his age.

IONA COLLEGE

Ben Goedemans: A national medallist in age distance swimming as well as being a Firsts volleyball player.

Tom Segger: The college captain, Segger was last year selected in Australian Schools Presidents Rugby XV and is also an excellent cricketer.

Rhys Wellings and Bodhi Dusha: Both boys compete at national level in mountain biking and track cycling respectively.

TRINITY COLLEGE, Beenleigh

The Beenleigh region is rich with Australian football talent and three of the best attend Trinity College. Lola Carey, Jonty Dick and Ashton Carlson were also members of the Gold Coast Suns AFL Academy.

IPSWICH SHS

Some of Queensland’s finest schoolboy talent can be found at Ipswich SHS, where NRL clubs eagerly watch the next generation of players coming through. Among the best at the moment is Kane Self and Oliva Iaulualo, both Queensland under 15 players and both contracted to the Newcastle Knights.

Another two young guns were front rowers. Rene Bagon is contracted to Manly Sea Eagles and flies each week to play Harold Matthews for Manly, while Josiah Pahulu is contracted to the Gold Coast Titans. Pahulu has made our Meninga Cup Team of the Week for the last two weeks.

But Ipswich SHS has plenty of other sporting achievers, including:

Holyee-Ann Jackson: In December, she competed in the 2021 Auscycling BMX Australian Titles. She was up against the best in Australia and won both the 12 year girls class and the 11-12 girls cruiser class giving her a Dual No.1 BMX Australian Title

Kaylee Anderson: Anderson has made the Under 14’s Ipswich Softball side for the last three years.

Brook Boetje: Boethe is Mixed Martial Arts Champion (in the cage) and will be having her next Cage Fight in two weeks. Brooke has also just won her Muaythai fight in the ring and has won numerous Juijitsu Fights as well.

EARNSHAW STATE COLLEGE

Earnshaw State College has an amazing baseball culture.

With a razor sharp eye, Maverick Winlaw last year represented Queensland as a softballer and the Brisbane Bandits rookie squad.

Isabella Ramirez, a 2022 senior, is in the Queensland Baseball open women’s team.

BELLBIRD PARK STATE SECONDARY COLLEGE

Indiana Platen: Platen is an amazing young under 15 heptathle who in the gruelling event snared a top 10 ranking Australia wide. She accumulated a personal best tally of 3780 points, improving her personal best overall points total by 218 points.

This was after shining in the 90m Hurdles (14.82sec, PB), high jump (1.57m, PB), shot put (8.58m, PB) and 800m (2.54mins, PB).

She and her brother Ethan were also state qualifiers in a variety of individual events – Ethan in 200m, 400m and high jump and Indiana in high jump, long jump, 100m and 200m.

Other Queensland state team representatives were Keisha Saengmanypheth (futsal) and the Chong-Nee boys, Simon and Jason, in rugby.

Emily Ryan: A Queensland Schools State team member who reached the Queensland open quarterfinals, tennis player Ryan won the silver grade at the Australian Money Tournament. A competitor at three pro tour UTR events, her highest singles ranking is 21 (junior) and 98 (opens, Australia). This year she will compete at the 2022 Canberra junior international.

Lara Hadzivukovic: Lara is an outstanding volleyball player who last year made the Queensland under 17 team.

Ellie Kendall: One of the best young hockey prospects around, Kendall was a part of the 2021 under 15 Queensland hockey team.

MT GRAVATT SHS

Mt Gravatt SHS is a hub of sporting young achievers across a variety of sports, from softball to swimming, football to trampoline gymnastics. And one of those sports featuring top class talent is futsal talent.

Competing in the Australian Futsal Association, Mt Gravatt has made it to the nationals and now are currently participating in the new School Futsal League competition.

Salmaan Benjamin is an example of the talent coming through. Salmaan has just been selected to represent Australia in his age group and is going to Italy to compete in the internationals in July this year.

Futsal – and football – is a real family affair at Mt Gravatt SHS.

LOURDES HILL COLLEGE

The old school of the great Olympian Susie O’Neill, Lourdes Hill College has another promising swimmer in its ranks – Elena Staal, a state and national finalist.

Also in the water Emily Graham is a state and national performer, while Laura Roy (Australian football) and Aphroditte Vourdousis (equestrian) are outstanding young athletes in their sports. Roy is a member of the Brisbane Lions Academy under 18s.

SHERWOOD STATE SCHOOL

The Sherwood State School has an elite skipping team – the Sherwood Arrows.

They are the longest serving team in the Heart Foundation Jump Rope For Heart Demonstration Skipping team which visits schools and demonstrates the skills that can be performed with a variety of ropes – spreading the message of living a healthy lifestyle.

The Sherwood State School Arrows consist of Emily Hill, Lucille Archer, Ella Thomson, Chloe Winks, Ivy Forrester (all year 6), Nicole Dorosheva, Lidia Fedin, Matilda Whitehill, Sidney Redman, Sophie Atkinson, Laria Valentine (all year 5), Yuika Haga (year 3) and Hannah (Year 1).

In addition to the skipping team, Sherwood has an outstanding endurance athlete – Ravi Robinson – who placed second in the Queensland under 10 1000m walk.

JOHN PAUL COLLEGE

A haven for elite sporting talent – from Olympians to national and state champions – the talent just keeps on coming through John Paul College.

In swimming, Daniel Holdway, Kira Mollee and Min Oh were all swimming gold medallists at the December state titles, while and Lucas Ngai snared silver at the states.

Mackenzie Auton and Olivia Olechnowicz were both basketball state representatives, while in track and field Isabella Welch (Cross Country) is a Queensland representative.

In addition, Summer Sullivan (silver medallist), Taylor Goodwin (gold medallist) and Padraig Heffernan (gold medallist) cleaned up at the recent state titles.

Bryce Thomas: Futsal player Thomas is a national junior team selection.

Olivia Olechnowicz: Played for Met East and qualified for the Queensland team.

Heidi Dennis: A high achieving junior track and field athlete, Dennis is now a Rugby 7s and football young gun who is on a scholarship contract with Brisbane Roar Liberty A-League Women’s Football team. She is also on a development contract with the Queensland Academy of Sport Rugby 7s.

Sarah O’Donoghue and Darcy Heffernan: Sarah and Darcy are football state representatives.

Tom Gaske: The elite junior golfer competed at the Greg Norman Junior Masters, Palmer Gold Coast golf course recently. Thomas finished the tournament as the 17 years and under Age Nett winner.

Gabby Jackson: Jackson is the Queensland School Sport Triathlon State Champion

Monique and Marrisa Hanlon: The sisters light up the track in the 200m. Monique is a 200m national runner-up (2019) and a 200m third place getter at the state titles.

Marissa Hanlon has gone one better, and is the 400m national champion and the 200m national runner up at the Australian Junior Championships in 2021.

Lucy Curran: This is some portfolio Curran is building in football (soccer). The Metropolitan West representative is a member of the powerful Western Pride club where she plays in their under 16 NPLW side – as captain. She was also a 2021 Western Pride under 23 NPLW player last season.

Loreto College features two young gun futsal players, Eleanor Rhodes and Grace Murray, both of whom made the Australian under 15 team competing in the Costa Blanca Cup.

The college is also a breeding ground for outstanding young water polo players and on Saturday will feature teams in the Brisbane water polo club grand final series.

Emily Humphries leads the way in water polo, a national championships player who was invited to training camp with Water Polo Australia at the AIS.

Maya Nelson and Grace Wallace were also under 15 state team representatives while Mckenna Simpson, Kate Peck and Xienna Pickup were Queensland under 14 representatives.

Volleyball is also strong at the college. Molly Clark and Chloe Sumich were members of the under 15 Queensland Junior Beach Volleyball team and Australian Junior Beach Volleyball side, as well as Australian Youth Volleyball championships representatives.

Alice Jensen was also a beach volleyball under 16 Queensland and Australian junior player.

Lewis Bishop: Bishop is a Queensland and Met East swimming representative.

Jake Tysoe: He competed in nine individual events and three relays at the December state swimming titles, making seven finals and placing in four events – the 100m butterfly (second), the 200m backstroke (third), the 50m butterfly (third) and 200m butterfly (third). He was nominated for Logan City Council Young Sportsman of the year 2021

Then this year he swam in eight events at the Met East carnival and will compete in seven events at the All Age National Championships.

BRISBANE BOYS COLLEGE

Rugby remains a stronghold at BBC, the 2020 GPS First XI champions. Coming through the ranks were Toby Kennedy and Cooper Goodman – both under 14s Queensland Country representatives – Oscar Donavan who made the Capricornia for Emerging Reds squad, Queensland Country representative Daniel Malum, Emerging SEA Reds player Cooper Eagle and Cartaar Westerberg who is in the Emerging Reds 15s squad.

Winners of the recent O’Connor Cup at the elite GPS Head of the River regatta, Brisbane Boys College rowers have an array of achievements behind them, including 1st VIII students Robert Atkinson, Lachlan Maclean, Toby Macpherson and Robbo Robertson who starred last season as well.

Josh Harris, Hemish Dubey, Nathan Adams, Ashton Trevor-Roberts, Rudra Potlapally, Sean Hudson, Liam Crook, Horton Faint, David Pelevin, Scott Kift and Thomas Cooley were all robotic aces who will represent Australia at the Robo Cup International Championships in Bangkok.

Cooper Johns: Another outstanding young athlete from Windaroo Valley is Johns, who finished third in shot put at the recent state titles.

Maddelyn Marston: Martson is a wonderful athletic all-rounder who runs anywhere between 400m and 2000m. At the recent state titles, the under 16 years runner was first in 400m and third in the gruelling 2000m steeplechase.

Hannah Casey: Casey is a national swimming champion and a member of the Australian Junior World Swim Team. At this month’s CaSSSA meet, Casey surpassed a record set by D Rose in 1998 for the 16 years 50m freestyle. She is following in the footsteps of an MSM alumni, multiple Olympic gold medallist Meg Harris.

Tara Cabaron: Carbaron joins Casey as a swimming young gun who is a national champion and Queensland Schools representative.

Emily Broun: Big hearted Broun is an Australian open water national medallist and Queensland State Championship winner in the 7.5km, 16 years, field. She also placed second at the Open Women’s 7.5km event

Emily Francis: Another ace in the water, this time in diving. Francis is the junior elite diving champion where she is first in 3m springboard (13 years) and second in platform (13 years).

Charlie Gibson: A Queensland Academy of Sport Women’s Program member, Gibson is also a Brisbane Roar Women’s A League train on player. The footballer is also on the Junior Matildas Monitoring extended list.

Zoe Anderson: The nibble Anderson is a gymnastics national champion, Level 9 vault.

Shelby Peace: Peace is a natural when it comes to volleyball. Identified right from the start by officials, she is now a Queensland under 17 beach volleyball representative and an under 16 indoor volleyball representative.

Enah Desic: Desic is an outstanding, multi code footballer who is a regional tribalist in Australian football, touch football and rugby league.

Aarushi El: El is in training for the All Ages national swimming championships where she will be competing in the 50m backstroke.

Chloe Kerswell: A product of Springwood Little Athletics Club, Kerswell is the state champion in 16 years javelin.

Marsden SHS is a booming base of basketball talent, with Haizyn Mellars, Allanah Anthony, Atawhai Pepene-Davis, Solomon Watene, Keriana Hippolite and Kara Kaufusi leading the charge.

Mellars is a Queensland state team club and school player, and a State League player with Spartans) – all the while playing rugby league for Wynnum Manly in the Meninga Cup, Connell Challenge. The QRL City under 17s 2021 representative is the son of New Zealand Olympic basketballer Char – and NRL player Vince.

Anthony made the Queensland state team, club and school, and plays State League with Logan Thunder, while Atawhai Pepene-Davis is a Queensland state team club and school player who represents South West in the State League.

Solomon Watene and Hippolite are Queensland state team schools reps who play with Logan Thunder, while Kaufusi is in the Queensland schools state team.

Chris Faagutu: The Marsden SHS Langer Trophy captain, Faagutu was the 2021 Justin Hodges Medal joint winner for the Langer player of the year. He played Meninga Cup with Souths Logan.

Txai Anglin: Anglin is an athletics star who is a five time state 400m champion and national title champion over that distance.

Eithen Leard: Could we be looking at a future Paralympics representative? Leard is a wheelchair basketballer, who is a mens under 23 state and national representative bound for the 2022 world championships.

Mia Dallinger: Dallinger is a physie three time state champion and four time national champion.

Ella Lane and Olivia Grundy: The triathlon young guns both made the 2021 Queensland School Merit Team in the gruelling sport.

Stefan Brits and Lily Vine: Both students were elite athletes who made the 2021 Queensland School Merit Team. Stefan is a javelin thrower who has achieved multiple state and national Top 3 placings. His personal best throw is 53.83m.

Lily is 100m, hurdles and long jump. At last year’s Qld All Schools Athletics Championships, Lily finished 4th in Long Jump, and came away with a silver medal in her hurdles

Zayden Gallagher: Keeping his eye on the ball is young tennis player Gallagher who made the 2021 Queensland School Merit Team.

Abby Craswell: Craswell is an elite athletics whose achievements include:

Craswell is aiming to make the 2024 Paris Paralympics

Teresa Anthony (Athletics)

A Queensland championships 2022 gold medallist, she is an under 17 triple jump (11.83m) champion and long jump bronze medallist (5.41m). She is also a 2021 national triple jumps silver medallist (11.82m)

Sophie Lillicrap (Athletics)

An outstanding jumper, Lillicrap narrowly missed the world junior qualifying height but will give it another go at the nationals starting on Saturday. She is the Queensland under 20 high jump gold medallist (1.75m) and the triple jump (11.41m) gold medallist.

She was also the silver medal winner at last year’s national (under high jump, 1.71m.

Ava Costa (Artistic Gymnastics)

Moreton Bay College has an amazing gymnastics culture and Costa is continuing the tradition. A Queensland High Performance program member, she is also a part of the junior national artistic gymnastics squad. She has been selected in the Australian junior women’s artistic gymnastics team currently competing in Germany.

Vahayliah Seumanutafa (Basketball)

A gold medal winner at the under 16 Australian Basketball Championships, Seumanutafa is a member of Basketball Australia’s National Performance Program while also being an under 18 Queensland representative.

Alice Dart (Basketball)

Another baseball ace, Dart was also a gold medallist at the under 16 nationals where she captained her side to the championship. Dart is a member of Basketball Australia’s National Performance Program.

Lily Richardson (Hockey)

In a highly competitive field, Richardson is bursting into hockey representative teams. She is a

2022 Queensland under 15 indoor team member and last year was a member of the under 15 Queensland team competing at the nationals. She was also a 2021 Queensland under 16 schoolgirls team member.

Francesca Chitukudza (Swimming)

Chitukudza led MBC’s charge at the recent QGSSSA swimming championship. She is a bronze medallist at the 2021 National Age Championships (14 years, 200m IM and 200m Butterfly), and qualified to compete at 2021 Olympic Trials in the 100m and 200m butterfly.

Chloe Nikola (Touch Football)

Nikola is a member of Australian Youth Trans Tasman Touch squad which unfortunately had its competition postponed due to the closure of the New Zealand border. She was also selected for Brisbane Cobras to compete at National Touch League Women’s 20’s.

Sophia Dobson (Netball and Volleyball)

The multi talented Dobson is a Queensland under 17 netball team selection for the National Netball Championships in April in Hobart, while also being a member of the under 18 Queensland Beach Volleyball team to compete at Australian Youth Beach Volleyball Championships in March in Coolangatta. Dobson has also been selected for the CLC Tigers Ruby Team to compete in the Hart Sapphire Series which is a feeder competition to the Suncorp Super Netball.

Charlotte Hansen (Volleyball)

Hansen was a second place getter at the Australian Youth Beach Volleyball Championships in 2020-2021. She was also an invitational training playing with the developing Volley Roos and is part of the QAS’s elite development squad. She is also a Queensland under 15 captain.

ST RITA’S COLLEGE

Ruby Crowther: during the CaSSSA swimming championship, Crowther (14 years, 50m sprint) set a new competition record, sweeping past the previous record set by N Marks’ in 1986.

Lily Carrick: A competitive swimmer, Carrick was invited into the Barbarians team at the recent water polo under 20 national championships.

THE GLENLEIGHDEN SCHOOL

Earlier this month Edison Hausler-Doo participated in the Brisbane Women’s Hockey, Junior Division 4 grand final for her Valley Hockey Club team.

It was an exciting final, with Valley narrowly losing.

She backed that performance up with a run in the touch rugby league Division 3 grand final, a mixed adult competition.

Again, she had to be content with runners-up honours, but both were great learning experiences of Hausler-Doo.

This year she will again play for Valley and continue to play in the Touch rugby league.

In addition, she has started as an assistant coach for the under 11 boys team at Valley.

Another excellent Glenleighden School sport is Xavier Tuthill who plays all abilities touch football.

He had the joy of helping his team, the UQ Rebels, win the Metro Cup at the end of last year.

Kaylah Moloney: Year 10 student who shines in league, union and touch. A Met West Rugby 7’s and Met West League player, she is also a Reds under 19 squad member and Met West touch player. He was the 2021 Junior Sports Person of the Year.

Bailee Williams: Year 11 Met West League footballer and Gold Coast Titans Development Squad.

Leilani Tuqiri: The Met West league rep is a Queensland representative and Gold Coast Titans Development squad member. And yes, she is from that famous rugby and league family.

Lucy McFarlane: Did we save one of the best until last? Yes we did. Lucy has qualified for the Australian Rowing Championship to be held in Sydney this weekend. The year 11 student was magnificent in the single scull and quad events at the recent Queensland State Championships where she claimed silver and bronze medals.

Jack Simmonds: Jack has earned a sport on the Queensland State Schools triathlon team after a blazing performance earlier this term at the state championships in Hervey Bay. He will now compete at the Queensland National Triathlon Championships in September. School mate Brianna Mow was also an outstanding triathlete at the school.
