From eye-catching athletes, to crafty offensive players and hard-nosed defenders – the Basketball Queensland Under-16 Boys State Championships on the Gold Coast had everything.

Young talents from all over the state showcased their skills at the tournament, which ran from April 3-6 at Coomera, with the goal of taking a championship back to their respective clubs.

And while the Southern Districts Spartans earned another title, beating Townsville in the grand final, there were standout performers across the board and we have revealed our top players from the tournament.

NOAH KIRK – SOUTHERN DISTRICTS SPARTANS

A dynamic guard who formed a dominant backcourt pairing with teammate Sam McDowell-White, Noah Kirk hasn’t missed a beat since moving to Spartans from Cairns. Kirk has averaged 15 points per game to help lead Spartans to the championship.

LENNON BANN – SOUTHERN DISTRICTS SPARTANS

A versatile forward who has been a mainstay of this dominant Spartans group for several years now, Bann has again been impressive this week for state championships. The big man has impacted the game on both ends of the floor as Southern Districts go all the way to the championship.

SAM MCDOWELL-WHITE – SOUTHERN DISTRICTS SPARTANS

A point guard with knowledge of the game beyond his years, Sam McDowell-White has impacted the game in many ways at state championships by creating for his teammates as well as himself when needed. His style emulated that of his older brother and NBL star, William McDowell-White.

ISAAC WELDON – TOWNSVILLE

A forward with great size, unbelievable length and a rim presence, which makes it extremely tough for opponents to score in the paint. Has been a big factor in Townsville making it all the way to the top two and pushing champions, Southern Districts all the way.

REGAN BLACHFORD – TOWNSVILLE

A leader for the runners-up Townsville Heat, Regan Blachford was in form all tournament as he helped the team from the north make it to the grand final. A wing who can break down defenders and score, Blachford averaged just above 12 points per game, including two 20-point games.

NOAH ANDERSON – TOWNSVILLE

Forming a dynamic duo on the wing for Townsville with Blachford, Noah Anderson was impressive all week for the Heat as they finished the tournament with a silver medal. Anderson averaged almost 14 points per game, including a tournament high of 27 points against the Gold Coast Waves.

MITCHELL CHEN – NGC SEAHAWKS

A big man who is an offensive powerhouse and a difficult proposition for any defence to stop and state championships was no different as he helped his North Gold Coast team into the top four at the tournament. Chen averaged almost 20 points per game, including three games where he scored above 25 points.

LOUIS RAZON – NGC SEAHAWKS

A crafty guard who can play out of the pick and roll and make things happen in transition, Louis Razon was a key ingredient for North Gold Coast to make the top four. Razon averaged just short of 10 points per game and had a tournament high of 20 points against Cairns.

NOAH STAUBER – NGC SEAHAWKS

A typical modern day big man who can shoot and can find his other teammates with his quality passing, Noah Stauber was another standout at the state championships. Stauber averaged 12 points per game, including an impressive 18 points against Gold Coast in the bronze medal playoff.

SAM SCOTT – GC ROLLERS

A tough hard-nosed player and scorer who is tough to stop from anywhere on the court, especially from the short corner and high post. Scott was in good form all week, averaging 15.1 points per game, including three 20-point games and 25 points in the bronze medal game against the Seahawks.

AYDEN MERRYLEES – GC ROLLERS

A tough player and defender who plays all 94 feet of the court and leads the way with his perseverance and hard-nosed plays for Gold Coast. Helped his Rollers team take home the bronze medal after winning the SQJBC title during the regular season.

MASON CHRISTIANSEN – GC ROLLERS

Just like Marrylees, Mason Christiansen is a player who prides himself on his toughness and playing every possession like its his last. Averaged just more than 10 points per game and had a tournament high of 19 points against the Seahawks in the bronze medal game.

ANGUS KEARNEY – NORTHSIDE WIZARDS

Angus Kearney continued his red-hot form from the SQJBC season into the state championships at Coomera, where he’s averaged more than 24 points per game to lead the tournament in scoring. Kearney’s week included a 40-point game and two 25-point games.

ISAIAH JORGENSEN – NORTHSIDE WIZARDS

A player with huge upside, who has great length and athleticism and showed all these qualities at the state championships. Jorgensen is a talent also on the defensive end with his ability to guard every position, he also averaged 10.8 points per game at the tournament.

CHARLIE WINKS – BRISBANE CAPITALS

An elite finisher in transition, who has great size and length at the guard spot, Charlie Winks had a big tournament for the Brisbane Capitals averaging 16.1 points per game with three games above 20 points and a tournament high of 30 against Rockhampton.

HARRY COOK – BRISBANE CAPITALS

The tallest player at the tournament, Harry Scott is a raw talent who is already impressing on the court. The defensive end is where Cook did his work as he made everything tough on the inside for the Capitals opponents at the state championships.

BRODIE MCBEAN – MACKAY METEORS

A high percentage sharpshooter from Mackay, Brodie McBean carried a heavy scoring load for the Meteors at the state championships. Averaged just short of 11 points per game, including two 18-point games during the week.
