Competition is heating up for under-16 basketball talents around southeast Queensland as we mark the end of the regular season by revealing the top scorers across all divisions.
The Southern Queensland Junior Basketball Competition (SQJBC) finals tip-off tomorrow with the state championships later in the year with some dominant performances headlining the season so far.
As we head into the finals, we have ranked the top scorers across all under-16 SQJBC divisions, which feature five divisions in the boys league and four divisions in the girls competitions.
Taking top spot is Moreton Bay Fire’s Romeo Link, who tallied an impressive 351 points at an average of 32.5 points per game in the Boys Division 2 competition.
Link’s season to date was highlighted by two 40-point games, including a season-high of 43 points against the RedCity Roar.
Toowoomba’s Millie Natalier takes second spot after leading the Under-16 Girls Division 2 competition in scoring with 299 points, more than 50 points away from the closest player in her division.
Millie averaged 23 points per game, including a high of 33 points against Ipswich.
Toowoomba’s basketball operations manager Sean Connolly said Millie was an extremely talented junior.
“She’s raw but a very good player,” he said.
“She’s a bucket on the offensive end and is very crafty.”
Angus Kearney from the Northside Wizards in the Boys Division 1 competition is the third highest scorer in the age group with 275 points while North Gold Coast Seahawks prodigy Mitchell Chen takes out fourth spot with 267 points.
The SQJBC semi-finals are on Saturday.
State Championships for under-16 boys are at Coomera on April 3-6 with the girls tournament on from April 12-15 at Rockhampton.
These young talents are the future of Queensland basketball and could also be future NBL1 prodigies with the senior competition tipping-off this weekend around the state.
