Three players reached double figures to lead the Burdekin Wildcats to a 31-point victory over the Southern Districts Trojans Black and complete an undefeated start to the Division 2 tournament.

After a win over the Gold Coast earlier in the day, the Wildcats looked to build on their form against Southern Districts and they did exactly that.

Burdekin made every possession tough for the Trojans on the defensive end and capitalised on offence to record another impressive victory.

Ashlee Colls scored 16 points for the Wildcats while Taylar Viero (11 points) and Zaylah Morris (10 points) also scored in double figures.

Replay: Queensland Basketball – U14 Girls Championship – Div 1: SW Metro Pirates Purple v Mackay Meteorettes

The hometown team Mackay Meteorettes have shown they are genuine contenders to win another state championship after a dominant day one which ended with a 54-point victory over the South West Metro Pirates.

Mackay were coming off a 34-point win over the Gold Coast Waves earlier in the day and they wanted more, putting the Pirates to the sword early on and never letting up for the rest of the contest.

The Meteorettes used their trademark Mackay defence and transition game to put a massive score on South West to finish undefeated, along with fellow contenders Logan, who are also in the same pool.

Cheyenne Bobongie was on fire again with 32 points for Mackay while Isabel Smith had 18 points and Amelia Crouch had 15.

Replay: Queensland Basketball – U14 Girls Championship – Div 1 – Northside Wizards v Logan Thunder Gold

The Northside Wizards have bounced back from a disappointing loss in the morning of the state championships to beat the Logan Thunder Gold and keep their chances of playing crossovers alive.

Northside fell to Cairns in their first contest and needed the victory against Logan’s second team and they started in desperate fashion, closing the door on a Thunder upset very early on in the game.

The Wizards continued to extend their lead to run away with a 19-point victory and finish day one in Mackay with one win and one loss.

Jacey Sturgeon had 18 points for the Wizards while Gloria Anei had 12.

Sinai Foai topscored for Logan with 10 points.

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U14 Girls Championships – Div 3 South West Metro Pirates Gold v Mackay Stars

The South West Metro Pirates have completed a perfect first day in the Division 3 tournament after going undefeated following a 16-point victory over the mackay Stars this afternoon.

South West came into the game in impressive form after a demolition of RedCity earlier in the day while the Stars were looking to bounce back after a loss to the USC Rip.

But it was the Pirates, who came out firing, with a balanced attack helping them take an early lead.

South West’s defence was then able to keep the Stars quiet to win their second game of the day.

Eliza Aguilar led the scoring with 14 points while Aaliyah Bazzara also scored 10.

WATCH REPLAY: BURDEKIN WILDCATS DEF GC BREAKERS 55-30 (Girls Div 2)

Burdekin Wildcats duo Makayla Pirrone and Kelsey Cox have combined to score just as much as their opponents as they led their team to an impressive 25-point victory over the Gold Coast Breakers in the Division 2 tournament.

The Wildcats were dominant from the opening tip as Pirrone and Cox caught fire on the offensive end to help Burdekin jump out to an early double digit lead.

From there, the team from North Queensland continued to extend their lead, with a deficit as big as 30 points at three-quarter time.

The Breakers managed an improved fourth quarter but it was too late as the Wildcats closed the game out.

Pirrone led the way with 18 points while Cox had 12.

Mali Jarrett was the leading scorer for the Gold Coast with 10.

Juan scored 32 points, which included one make from three-point land, for the Phoenix in their opening game in Pool A in the Division 1 competition.

Neither team could pull away throughout the game as both Sunshine Coast and Townsville matched each other’s runs.

But in the end, Juan and teammate Maya Winiata (13 points) made the big plays when it counted for the Phoenix to earn a five-point win over the Flames to start the tournament.

Talieya McCaskill (19 points) and Clara Kolb (18 points) were the standouts for Townsville.
