Police search Coopers Plains business after suspicious disappearance of Lachlan Griffiths

Police have searched a business in Brisbane’s south as they investigate the suspicious disappearance of a man reported missing on Australia Day.

The investigation into the suspicious disappearance of a Brisbane man last month has taken a turn after police executed a crime scene search warrant at a business in the city’s south.

Detectives executed the search warrant at a Coopers Plains business after Indooroopilly man Lachlan Griffiths, 35, was reported as a missing person on January 26.

Police and family hold concerns for his welfare as he has not made contact with anyone since.

Detective Inspector Dave Jackman said police had set up a crime scene warrant at the Musgrave Rd business, which is a transport depot.

Mr Griffiths was tracked to that location around the time he went missing.

“We are still holding that scene, it’s a complex scene to examine, that’s why the length of time that we have held it,” Insp Jackman said.

“We are appealing for any persons who knows Lachlan Griffiths or his movements post January 16 or 17 of this year to come forward and speak with police.”

Mr Griffiths was staying at the Meriton at Herschel St in the city, where he was last seen.

“Investigations from that point, his mother has reported him missing some 10 days later to police,” Insp Jackman said.

“He is in constant contact with his mother so that is out of character for him.

“Our investigations have led to an address where we are conducting a crime scene examination of that premises.

“We have no signs of life of that person post that date of January 16 or 17, so we have got concerns for his current whereabouts.

“We are actually treating this as a homicide investigation, because as the length of time goes on … we hold concerns that he is still alive.”

Insp Jackman said Mr Griffiths was tracked to the business on the morning he was last seen alive.

He wasn’t known to have any association with the business.

Police are conducting a scientific examination at the business which had industrial waste inside.

“It is quite a clutter-filled establishment so it is taking some time to piece through that,” Insp Jackman said.

Detectives believe a vehicle at the scene was the last vehicle Mr Griffiths was possibly in before he disappeared.

Insp Jackman said police had spoken with a number of witnesses.

“There are a couple of persons of interest but at this stage we are still undergoing investigations into the circumstances as to how he came to be at that address, or around that address at the time,” he said.

Insp Jackman said he wasn’t able to confirm if Mr Griffiths was with anyone at the time he disappeared.

“We will be alleging that he was with other people at the time (that he went to the address) but we have nothing past that point,” he said.

Police had not recovered anything from the scene, he said.

Mr Griffiths is unemployed.

“Mum as you can imagine is quite concerned, it is his birthday today,” Insp Jackman said.

“She has been with us quite often over the last four weeks during the investigation so she is concerned for his safety and his friends have reached out as well … and they are quite concerned.”

The Indooroopilly Criminal Investigation Branch has set up an incident centre under the code name Operation Uniform Stein.

Officers will remain at the Coopers Plains property and a mobile police facility has been set up at the location as investigations continue.

Anyone with information about Mr Griffiths should contact police.

Mr Griffiths is described as caucasian with a fair complexion, sandy hair and hazel eyes.

Queensland Police are holding a press conference about the matter at 1pm.
