MEET the Bulimba man who is helping the next crop of Queensland cricketers gain a competitive edge.
After eight years as a physiotherapist, Louis Ellery began studying Functional Patterns four years ago before opening his own FP studio in Seven Hills last July.
FP differs from traditional physiotherapy by focusing on gait (running/walking) mechanics to identify problematic patterns of movement on the body, regardless of the area of pain.
Using running to improve posture and movement, the system can then help decrease chronic pain and improve performance.
Among Ellery’s growing client list are a number of Queensland second XI cricketers, including South Brisbane batsman Aryan Jain and Redlands pair James Bazley and Leigh Drennan.
Himself a former first grade player at Souths, Ellery also treats a number of athletes from other sports, as well as people simply looking to live life pain-free.
The attraction for clients, he said, was FP’s ability to get the best out of the body.
“We continually see people from all athletic backgrounds coming into us in chronic pain and not realising that there is a way to train your body that respects the way we evolved to move; to run, walk and throw,” he said.
“When our primary focus with training is not to improve one of these three motions, our bodies tend to compensate; we might tear a muscle, we might develop tendinitis or we might simply be stiff and tight when we wake up in the morning.”
