Australia's growing drug crisis

A Brisbane man who lost his sight and suffered brain injuries after he jumped off a fourth-storey balcony during a kidnapping has been charged with drug trafficking and other offences, with a woman pleading guilty to assisting him.

Wishart man Phillip Damatrios Koklas, 36, appeared in Brisbane Supreme Court last week on four serious drug offences.

They included trafficking in dangerous drugs between January 16 – March 29 last year, two counts of supplying a Schedule 1 dangerous drug, and possessing a commercial quantity of heroin.

Defence counsel Sam Di Carlo told the court his client, who was originally to have entered a plea on that day, told the court there remained outstanding issues in the case which he retained “some confidence” of being resolved.

He said the resolution of them was being delayed by the fact his client did not understand braille and so required extra time to give instructions to his defence team.

Mr Koklas suffered permanent impairment in September 2014 when he fell 15m off a fourth-storey balcony.

It was previously reported in an unrelated matter that two men attended Mr Koklas’ Wishart residence armed with knives and machetes.

Mr Koklas was frogmarched to an inner-city apartment block where he was told he was on his “last chance”.

Fearing his death, Mr Koklas, threw himself over the edge in an attempt to land on the third-floor balcony, but instead fell the entire distance.

Mr Koklas was supported in court last week by co-defendant Taylor Jane Maloney, 29, who pleaded guilty to a string of drug offences.

Ms Maloney was originally charged with drug trafficking also, but she entered a plea to the lesser charge of permitting use of place.

She also pleaded guilty to supplying a Schedule 1 dangerous drug and possessing a commercial quantity of heroin.

Her charges were adjourned to February 22 next year for sentencing hearing, with Mr Koklas’ charges to be mentioned also on that date.
