A Redlands mum has been jailed for arming herself with a metal pole and travelling to the home of a 15-year-old boy dating her daughter and bashing him because she did not approve of their relationship.

The Capalaba woman in her forties, who cannot legally be named as doing so would identify her child victim, which is prohibited under legislation, pleaded guilty in Brisbane District Court to assault occasioning bodily harm armed with an offensive instrument and stealing.

Both offences occurred on January 22 last year at Cleveland.

The victim was in a relationship with the woman’s daughter and there had been tension between the pair, the court heard, as the boyfriend had been in trouble with the law before.

The “hostility” between the older woman and her young victim increased over a period, with “threatening” messages sent.

Ultimately, the discord caused the woman’s daughter to run away from home the day prior to the offences being committed.

On the day in question, the woman travelled to her daughter’s boyfriend’s home, where he was alone working in his carport.

When she confronted the boyfriend, he was on the phone to her daughter.

Upon hanging up, the woman asked the teen, “Do you want to talk about it?”, which he answered in the negative.

She then pulled a 50cm-long metal bar from her sleeve, struck the boy in the knee, then hit him all over his body, including his head and neck, telling him, “F****** leave her, don’t come near my daughter.

The assault left the boy curled up on ground moaning, “I’m going to die,” to which the woman responded, “Good, if you don’t die I’m coming back”.

The assault left the boy hospitalised with bruising, abrasions and lacerations to his head.

When tracked down and interviewed by police, the woman said she suffered PTSD, anxiety and depression, and had taken valium the day of the assault, which she couldn’t remember as she “blacked out”.

It was submitted on the woman’s behalf she had a long history of mental health problems exacerbated by her history of drug and alcohol abuse.

She was jailed for 12 months with her parole release set at January 30 next year.
