Near misses at Queensland level crossings

A woman has died in a horror crash at one of Brisbane’s notoriously dangerous intersections.

Her car collided with a train at Lindum rail station on Brisbane’s bayside about 1.45pm.

Paramedics attended the crash but she could not be saved.

The woman, aged 32, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. She was from overseas and was believed to be in the country on a student visa.

The train was a non passenger service and had no passengers on board when it collided with the vehicle at Lindum Station.

Cleveland line trains resumed at 9.25pm after being suspended in the aftermath of the incident.

The intersection of Lindum and North roads at Lindum train station has been considered one of the city’s most dangerous for over a decade with commuters, local residents and politicians calling for a solution to the level crossing.

Today’s crash also comes two years after an elderly woman died after being hit by a train at the crossing.

A solution for the intersection has been in the works for the past 18 months after $125 million was designated to a fix in a combined effort from the Brisbane City Council and Morrison Federal Government, while the Queensland Government also tipped in $40 million following a recent precinct study into the crossing.

Federal Member for Bonner Ross Vasta (LNP), who has been campaigning for a solution to the Lindum crossing for a decade and helped get $85 million for the intersection from the Federal Government, has already conveyed his thoughts on his Facebook page.

“I have spent the last hour on the phone to police over the tragedy that has unfolded on the Lindum level crossing today,” he said.

“A young woman with her whole life ahead of her has tragically died at this notorious intersection.

“My deepest condolences to her family, friends and loved ones. I grieve with you. This is just an awful accident.

“I have always been pushing to have this dangerous level crossing fixed. Today is not the day to point fingers, but please be assured I will be bringing this tragedy to the attention of my colleagues as a matter of urgency.

“Another life gone too soon.”

State Member for Lytton Joan Pease also expressed her condolences after the tragic incident.

“Earlier this afternoon, police and paramedics attended a fatal crash at the Lindum rail crossing,” she said.

“My heart breaks for the young woman who died, and for her grieving family and friends.

“Any death on our roads is a tragedy.

“Like me there are many in our community who have been shaken by what has happened today.

“Fixing the Lindum crossing is my number one priority and I will keep pushing to start work as soon as possible.”
