Brisbane bayside’s reputation as a development hot spot continues to grow with two new projects.

A flashy, new childcare centre in Wynnum and a 31-block housing project in Wynnum West are the latest proposals to be approved and set to start construction in the coming months.

The childcare centre project from Robanna Holdings Pty Ltd at 2327 Wynnum Rd, which was recently approved by the Brisbane City Council, is at the site of a formerly Church-owned building and is currently a boarding house.

The project features four rooms for children as well as two sleep areas, an outdoor dining area, an arts are and 30 carpark spaces.

Councillor for Wynnum Manly (ALP) Peter Cumming said he approved of the development and said it would be a nice addition for families in the area.

“It is a bit sad that some people will have to leave the boarding house but some will still be able to stay there,” he said.

“However it’s a good development, it’s a bonus for people who may have primary school kids as well as kids who need childcare because it’s right next to Wynnum State School.

The development will add to the long list of childcare centres on the bayside, which already stretched to more than 15.

“The population is growing in Wynnum and as it continues to grow, there will be the need for more childcare centres,” Cr Cumming said.

“I think there is the need for it because if there wasn’t people wouldn’t be putting in applications to build more in the area.”

On top of the childcare centre, a housing development has been approved for 420 Kianawah Rd, Wynnum West.

The project, from Sutgold Pty Ltd situated between the Wynnum Vikings AFL Club and Wynnum Rd, will consist of 31 blocks ranging in size from 405 sqm to 728 sqm.

Cr Cumming said the land was initially meant to be retirement homes then a nursing home but instead has just turned into a subdivision proposal.

He also said townhouses would not be built at the site as it was not permitted in that zone.

“As mentioned previously, the population in Wynnum Manly continues to grow, so we are going to need more residential developments and to have variety on top of townhouse communities and apartment complexes is good,” he said.

Cr Cumming said in addition more than five hectares of low lying land and bushland would be transferred to council’s stock of bushland.

He also said the latest projects continued to show that developers have a great amount of confidence in the bayside as a growing area.
