More than 800 jobs available on Brisbane’s bayside

Jobs have been lost at a rapid rate in recent months but one little Brisbane pocket is bouncing back in a major way with hundreds of jobs on offer. Here’s how you can land a position.

MANY Queenslanders have had their lives torn apart in recent months but this little Brisbane pocket is turning things around with more than 800 jobs on offer to help residents get back on their feet.

Brisbane’s bayside has been a hub for development over the past year and that has been a major bonus after the coronavirus pandemic, with multimillion-dollar projects in the area requiring hundreds of staff.

The developments with employment opportunities available include a new $20 million centre by one of the area’s biggest schools, a $10 million revamp of a leagues club, a new $37 million townhouse community and more.

On top of that, the state’s largest indoor play centre has opened in the area with jobs available and other local business calling for more staff.

Here is where the jobs are and how you can apply for them.

IONA COLLEGE DEVELOPMENT/TOMKINS BUILDERS – 400 JOBS

Positions: Demolition, Earthwork, Concrete structure, trade packages, Metalwork, Roofing, Cladding, Ceilings and Partitions, Floor Finishes, Painting, Waterproofing, Electrical, Hydraulic, Fire and Mechanical, Services, Landscaping, Cleaning, Industrial and Commercial Building Supplies

The construction of Iona College’s new Provence Centre will cost approximately $20 million and will employee in excess of 400 workers ranging from project staff, foreman, construction labourers and tradesman employed by local businesses. These trades will include workers ranging from groundworks contractors, electricians, plumbers, carpenters and multiple finishing trades.

Tomkins has also promoted and is working with Iona College regarding their cadetship program which has the potential to employ recently graduated students either undertaking or intending to undertake Bachelors Degrees in Engineering, Construction Management or Architecture.

Additionally, Tomkins will undertake an information session for current students in order to promote the construction industry as a career with a view to hopefully generating interest in the many varied professions and trades within the industry.

AMAZON (LYTTON) – 200 JOBS

Positions: Unknown

Global retail giant Amazon announced they are coming to Brisbane earlier this month with a new fulfilment centre to be located in Lytton. The new fulfilment centre will be around the same size as two rugby league fields with operations set to start before Christmas, creating 200 job opportunities to support the local economy and enabling faster delivery to customers in Queensland. It will house more than half a million items from Amazon.com.au, ranging from health, household and personal care products, to electronics, books, gardening equipment and pantry staples. Works have already started at the site, supporting more than 170 construction jobs over the development and fit-out phase.

ARBOR PARK DEVELOPMENT (WYNNUM WEST) – 200 JOBS

Positions: Construction

Developers Pellicano and Arcone are bringing a $37 million townhouse community to the bayside with the project, on Wynnum Rd at Wynnum West, to start construction this month. The development will bring more than 200 construction jobs to the area over the next 18 months to help build one of the biggest projects in the area. The townhouse community is scheduled for completion in late 2021 with the jobs still up for grabs as no subcontractors have been appointed yet.

WYNNUM MANLY LEAGUES CLUB (MANLY WEST) – 40 JOBS

Positions: Customer Service Attendants, covering all areas of hospitality positions

“We are looking at potentially up to 40 new employees within our group which will include traineeships, apprenticeships, school-based trainees,” CEO Craig Thomas said.

The new roles at the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club have come up as the venue’s $10 million revamp nears completion. The redevelopment is the club’s first major upgrade in its history with the finished product to include more bars as well as eating areas and entertainment facilities.

JUNGLE ADVENTURE PLAY CENTRE (TINGALPA) – 30 JOBS

Positions: Head chef, restaurant hands, general workers

Queensland’s largest indoor play centre at Tingalpa is now open for business after their initial open date was pushed back due to the coronavirus. But with the $10 million facility receiving attention from all over the state, owners Lachlan and Jana Walker are in need of employees to cope with the amount of customers.

“We will be employing over 30 people in this venue as restrictions ease and we can return our business to normal trade. We are hoping that there are local people who are looking for work in both our restaurant and across our exciting new attractions,” Mr Walker said.

WATERLOO BAY HOTEL – 25 JOBS

Positions: General hotel, bar and bottle shop staff

“The Waterloo Bay Group including two hotels, six bottle shops and 42 motel rooms currently employs 60 staff and maintained 50 while during the lockdown period,” director Justin Ham said.

“We are looking for people to be part of our group who understand great service and pride in the workplace is first and foremost. We will approximately employ another 25 staff over the next six months and we estimate once the (Wynnum) cinema is operational (believed to be early 2021) a further 50 will be required to maintain service standards with the increased volumes.

BARTONS MOTORS (WYNNUM & REDLANDS) – 5 JOBS

Positions: 1 Customer Care Consultant, 1 Sales Consultants, 1 Sales Manager, 1 Business Manager, 1 Vehicle Detailer

Despite sales being down almost 40 per cent during the coronavirus pandemic, the biggest car dealership on the bayside and one of the largest in southeast Queensland is still after more staff to continue its rise. Bartons has recently completed more than $10 million in redevelopments to its showrooms in Wynnum and Redlands and also created more employment opportunities in recent months by becoming the first dealership in Australia to open a barber shop in its car yard.

COFFEE CLUB (WYNNUM) – 2 JOBS

Positions: Barista

The Coffee Club at Wynnum and Tingalpa has two barista positions available as the hospitality industry continues to bounce back after the COVID-19 pandemic. The positions are for people with at least two years experience as a barista and must have a love for coffee and great customer-focused energy to fit into The Coffee Club team.

The Manly Hotel is one of the premier venues across the bayside and although its venue on Cambridge Pde is not fully opened yet after the coronavirus, the business still needs casual bottle shop staff for its Bottlemart stores throughout the area.
