A BRISBANE college will undergo a major facelift this year after turning the sod on a new $20 million multipurpose centre.
Iona College announced the start of the development, to be called The Provence Centre, yesterday in front of students, staff, local politicians and officials from Tomkins Commercial Builders.
Principal Trevor Goodwin said the centre, which will include indoor multipurpose sports courts and be used for large college and community gatherings, as well as signature sporting events, was 35 years in the making.
The venue will also have the potential to have tiered seating for major events.

Iona College rector Fr Michael Twigg said it also took three years of planning, consultation and hard work from many people.
“It brings together a key strategic priority of being able to gather together as one community, even though it is being built at a time of heightened sensitivities about gatherings due to the pandemic,” he said.
“The college gives thanks for the generations of families who have entrusted their sons to an Iona education and this project recognises the many blessings that have come from that trust.
“The Provence Centre is being funded entirely by the resources of the college but with the aim of wider community benefit.”
Scheduled to be finished in May next year, the project will bring more than 400 jobs to the area.
“The very choice of Tomkins was on the shared belief that local business should benefit from this investment and Tomkins have made a commitment for that to occur,” Fr Twigg said.
A Tomkins spokesman said they were promoting and working with Iona College regarding their cadetship program, which has the potential to employ recently graduated students either undertaking or intending to undertake Bachelors Degrees in Engineering, Construction Management or Architecture.
The centre will also include canteen facilities, change rooms, amenities and breakout spaces will be created for additional learning and community events.
