Tenders for the five-year project, which will include a new maternity wing and birthing suites, were put out this week.

It is believed at least three large construction companies were major contenders to build the state-of-the-art maternity unit, a new multistorey carpark and an extra 206 beds.

Once completed, Logan will rise as one of three main southside hospitals offering specialised maternity care including water birthing and rooms for new dads to stay overnight.

A state-of-the-art birthing unit will be added to Logan Hospital in a $460 million overhaul.

It will be part of the hospital’s rapid expansion to manage demand ahead of a major expansion due to be completed by 2025.

Tenders for both the hospital expansion and the maternity upgrade were issued to short-listed companies after an open market expression of interest process was finalised last month.

Detailed designs on the major expansion started last month and a series of infrastructure upgrades will be done this year before the main construction starts in 2021.

Jobs Minister Shannon Fentiman said the works would create 1000 jobs during construction.

“This is one of Queensland’s largest ever hospital expansions and will ensure that locals receive the best care, close to home.”

Birthing pools and overnight facilities for partners will be part of a major $18.87 million upgrade to Logan Hospital’s maternity service.

The hospital will remain operating during the expansion which has been in the planning stage for more than a year.

Metro South Health consulted new mums, families and clinicians to complete a detailed design for the upgrade.

The project will deliver six extra maternity inpatient beds, five new birthing suites, and an expanded special care nursery.

An outdoor area will be built in creating more rooms and one of the hospital’s main buildings will rise by four storeys, almost doubling capacity.

Clinical and support areas including the emergency department, mental health, intensive care, endoscopy and coronary care units will also undergo a facelift.

As well as the boost to healthcare services, the scale of the project meant there would be significant employment opportunities for local tradies and subcontractors, and into the future, more healthcare workers.

The hospital has already been given a $1.5 million Mental Health Lounge in the emergency department and a $9 million 28-bed medical ward, which was craned into place last year.

Construction for the maternity upgrade project is due to start in September.
