An iconic Mexican restaurant on Brisbane’s southside may relocate or close for good after a fast food giant lodged a development application on the site.
Montezuma’s Mount Gravatt, located on the corner of Logan Rd and Lumley St, Upper Mount Gravatt, would be refurbished, expanded and have a drive-through added to facilitate its rebranding as a KFC restaurant under plans lodged late last week with Brisbane City Council by Consult Planning on behalf of Collins Property Development Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Collins Food.
Under the plan, the existing building which houses Montezuma’s would be retained but modified, including with the installation of an additional entrance and dining area to be on the northern side of the building, taking the gross floor area from 246 sqm to 268 sqm.
Entrance to the new drive-through, which would wrap around the southern and western sides of the building, would be via Lumley St.
The new KFC would be able to seat up to 50 customers.
Carparking spaces at the site would be reduced from 55 to 31, some of which would be reserved for staff.
A new footpath on the northern side of the site would facilitate pedestrian access to KFC from Logan Rd.
A spokeswoman for Montezuma’s Mesa Australia Pty Ltd, trading as Montezuma’s Mesa Restaurants, said it was “business as usual” at Montezuma’s Mount Gravatt.
She said the company, which is in a state of flux as they await a new CEO who is due to move from interstate in mid-February, had not formed a view as to whether, if the DA was approved, Montezuma’s Mount Gravatt would relocate or shut for good.
If it does close for good, it would joint Montezuma’s outlets at Redcliffe, Kedron and New Farm which have shut their doors in the last several years.
Collins Food, which also owns Taco Bell in Australia, declined to comment.
Brisbane City Council is yet to respond to the DA.
