The site of a heritage-listed house more than 130-years-old on Brisbane’s waterfront could be in store for a massive addition after a development application was submitted for a luxury residential tower.
Burgundy Group Property Development Pty Ltd submitted the proposal for a 15-storey apartment complex at the site of Kangaroo Point’s Shafston House to the Brisbane City Council on January 28.
The proposal at 23 Castlebar St is for 37 units, including 27 three bedroom apartments and 10 four bedroom apartments on the southwestern corner of the site, as well as two four-bedroom riverhomes on the eastern corner.
Shafston House was built in 1891 and placed on the heritage registry in 2005.
Urbis are the town planned behind the project with Rothelowman designing the plans.
The proposal also comes after a development application for the demolition of the 1990s educational buildings and the later extensions to the wards building, the orderlies cottage and the postal depot building was lodged in February 2021 and approved by the Brisbane City Council in August.
“No demolition of any heritage buildings or any components of any heritage buildings at the site are required to facilitate the proposed development,” Urbis said in the application.
“Indeed no physical works are proposed to occur to any of the heritage buildings within the Shafston House State Heritage Place as part of this DA.”
In the application, Urbis also say the new developments at the site have been situated so Shafston House would still be the main feature.
If approved, the project is scheduled to start construction in March, 2023 with the project estimated to be complete in August, 2024.
