Lindum level crossing needs more to ensure safety of locals according to head of local college

The head of a local college believes more areas need to be addressed to fix “danger” crossing on Brisbane’s bayside.

SURROUNDING areas to the Lindum rail station also need to be addressed if there is to be a fix to the dangerous level crossing in the future.

That is according to rector of the nearby Iona College Fr Michael Twigg, who believes the crossing needs an urgent fix to be safe for local residents and students.

Fr Twigg said he and the college welcomed the recent announcement from Federal member for Bonner Ross Vasta that the Morrison Government committed $400,000 towards a feasibility study for a solution for the crossing.

“We hope it will lead to eventual upgrades to this very dangerous crossing,” he said.

“Mr Vasta has been focused on this issue for at least two years and I know that there has been support at state and council level.

“As a local resident of Hemmant from birth and now a resident of Lindum, I have seen this crossing as a point of genuine concern for years. We commit to working with all levels of Government and the local community to ensure that our local lives matter.”

But Fr Twigg said it was not only the crossing which needed to be addressed in order to make the intersection safer.

“There are also significant areas of concern that also need addressing if this area is to be truly safe and ready to accommodate uses into the future,” he said.

“The Kianawah Road extension and the expansion of the port will both need to be monitored for a fully interconnected plan.”

Labor city councillor Peter Cumming, who also believed the funding from the Federal Government was a good start to fixing the issue, said there were several options to fix the crossing, including a flyover or tunnel.

But he said both would cost a significant amount, something he hoped the feasibility study could determine.

“A detailed estimate of the cost would be worth having, whether that be $50 million or $100 million or even more.” he said.
