Federal Government announce funding to find solution for dangerous Lindum level crossing

The Federal Government has announced funding to find solution for a dangerous Brisbane level crossing, about two weeks after an elderly woman was hit and killed by a train.

Federal MP Ross Vasta announces funding for Lindum level crossing

ONE of the most dangerous level crossings in southeast Queensland is a step closer to being fixed after the Federal Government committed to funding a feasibility study for a solution at the Lindum Rail Station.

Federal Member for Bonner Ross Vasta made the announcement this morning with $400,000 designated to the study towards planning for the removal of the level crossing at Lindum.

It is the first funding dedicated to finding a solution for the crossing, which has been a major issue among residents and commuters in the bayside area for more than 12 years.

The announcement also comes almost two weeks after a 70-year-old woman was killed after being hit by a train at Lindum Station.

“The Federal Government today is announcing $400,000 to go towards a feasibility study to fix this very dangerous intersection,” Mr Vasta said.

“Last week unfortunately someone lost their life here and this has made my resolve (to find a solution) even stronger.

“I am working very hard and I want to work with my state colleague (State Member for Lytton Joan Pease) and my council colleague (Councillor for Wynnum Manly Peter Cumming) and together we are going to fix this terrible intersection once and for all.

“The bayside community overwhelmingly needs Lindum crossing fixed and I am pleased to be delivering this funding but this is just the first step.”

Mr Cumming and Ms Pease, who were also at the Lindum Station for the announcement this morning, both welcomed the funding and hoped all levels of government could come together, regardless of political affiliations, to fix the crossing.

“I express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the woman who tragically lost her life at the Lindum Rail Crossing last night,” Ms Pease said in a Facebook post after the recent death at the Lindum Station.

“Our community knows how important upgrading this crossing is and I acknowledge that our Federal Member Ross Vasta is committed to securing support from the Federal Government to get the job done.

“As the State Member, I will continue to take this issue up with Brisbane City Council and lobby my colleagues in the Queensland Government to make fixing Lindum everyone's priority.

“Regardless of the level of government or political party, I stand with the people of the bayside to call on all levels of government to work together on a solution for Lindum.”

Ms Pease also said the Department of Transport and Main Roads was working with the Brisbane City Council on a study of all level crossings in the BCC area “to identify future priorities for upgrades, and Lindum is part of that study”.

Mr Cumming said he thought the feasibility study would help officials have a clearer idea of what it would, including the cost, of fixing the crossing.
