The family of a man, who was fighting for his life following six surgeries in seven days after allegedly being stabbed in the neck and arm, have spoken as their loved father and husband still recovers in hospital.
Father-of-seven Hemi Hippolite, otherwise known as Boyo, suffered life threatening injuries but is now in a stable condition at the Gold Coast University Hospital after the incident at Pacific Pines on the Gold Coast on June 23.
The Kuraby resident had his sixth surgery on Friday after losing a significant amount of blood following the lacerations to his neck and arm but was lucky no major arteries in his neck were hit.
Mr Hippolite’s son-in-law, Josh, also had surgery on his arm and will need to undergo rehabilitation after being injured while saving Boyo, even applying pressure to his wounds while waiting for emergency services.
Tia Hippolite, Boyo’s wife, said the past week had been a scary time for the family.
“For the family there was quite a bit of unknowns as Boyo had life threatening injuries, so it was very stressful,” she said.
“For all of us we are just grateful to all be alive and are taking it day-by-day as Boyo undergoes more surgery on his arm.
“But I think it’s going to be a long road of healing and recovery for us all.
Mrs Hippolite said there were two things which saved her husband’s life.
“In the morning that day boyo did a first aid refresher for work, so when it happened he just remembered to stay calm and breathe,” she said.
“Then of course Josh remaining as calm as possible for Boyo while also dealing with the incident.”
At an extremely emotional and stressful time, the family have been overwhelmed by the incredible support from family and friends.
“We’ve had a massive response from family and friends with support, people even flying in from Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand to be with Boyo this week,” Mrs Hippolite said.
A GoFundMe page has also been started by Mrs Hippolite’s sister to help the family recover from the incident.
“During their recovery, there have been extra expenses incurred as my sister has gathered their seven children and two grandchildren together, to help in the recovery process,” the sister posted on the GoFundMe page.
“They have been travelling daily from Kuraby to the Gold Coast and parking all day to visit their Dad/Papa and Josh.
“There is uncertainty with regards to future income that both have been bringing in to support their families, due to their injuries.
“All proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to my sister and nieces family, to help ease one burden as they go through this difficult period of recovery.”
