WORK has started on the highly anticipated Murarrie Recreation Hub which will open the Brisbane River to the precinct.

Together with the BrewDog brewery development directly above it, the $1.5 million council project is set to transform the industrial precinct into a destination.

The old fishing pontoon off Metroplex Ave was demolished late last month, paving the way for work to start on the new public multipurpose recreation platform, with a barge moved in this month for piling works.

The new structure will create access for short-term use for recreational vessels, water taxis, jet skis, kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. Fishing will be allowed on the pontoon, but boating and recreational craft will have priority.

Construction is expected to be completed and the facility opened in early 2020.

Councillor Lisa Atwood (Doboy) said the facility would link in with pontoons along the Brisbane River at New Farm Park, Dutton Park and West End.

“I can’t wait for this better access to be provided to encourage more residents and visitors to get out on our river and be active, whether it’s with a small boat, kayak or a stand-up paddle board,” Cr Atwood said.

RIVER ACCESS HUB OPENS AT WEST END

“Along with the Murarrie Recreation Hub, another on-water hub at the City Botanic Gardens will begin construction soon.

“Our River Access Network is part of our plan to create more for residents to see and do along the river.”

Meanwhile Scottish craft beer company BrewDog’s $30 million brewhouse at 77 Metroplex Ave is expected to be operational by the end of the year. Along with the brewing and canning facility it features a restaurant, taproom and visitor centre.
