Four years ago Whetton was the new boy on the block in Mark Knowles’ national side and with that came an element of insecurity.

This time he has additional confidence and “feels more a part of the group’’ although he was taking nothing for granted.

“I feel like I belong in this group and to know I will be a part of that senior leadership group is really special.’’

But being a leader in the group has also heightened his responsibilities.

“Having that leadership role it is a bit different and very exciting. The Olympics only comes around every four years.

“Now realising the disappointment we had in Rio, to get a chance to go for gold, it is something I have been itching for since 2016.’’
