Staff at a southside Bunnings have earned praise from customers after stepping in to save some peewee chicks that hatched in the hardware store recently.

When the Upper Mount Gravatt Bunnings staff noticed the three peewee chicks were headed for trouble without some human intervention, they improvised and used a hanging basket as a nest.

They even put up a warning sign so customers kept their distance.

Wildcare Australia Incorporated took to Facebook to share the heartwarming story.

“A shout-out to Bunnings Warehouse Australia Upper Mount Gravatt store,” the Facebook post read.

“To keep the fledgling chicks safe and off the ground, kind staff made a makeshift nest out of a hanging basket and ensured the parent birds returned to feed them.

Wildcare Australia Incorporated encouraged others to use hanging basket if they were caring for birds.

“These coconut fibre hanging baskets make wonderful nests if you are reuniting a baby bird with it’s family,” they said.

“The baskets are safe and comfortable, economical to purchase, drain well in rain and the wire hanging hook makes attaching to a tree easy peasy.

“Thank you so much to this Bunnings store for going above and beyond for our wildlife.”

Facebook users took to Facebook to share their admiration and gratitude.

“Just wonderful, Team Brisbane,” Whendiey Stewart posted.

“Well done Bunnings and thank you,” Jeannette Harbourne said.
