Brilliant Australian heavyweight boxer Joe Goodall will have a shoulder operation later this year before ramping up his professionalcareer, which trainer Glenn Rushton thinks will peak in three to four years.
Goodall, who is out of the Stretton Boxing Club stable, will have another two bouts before the operation which will sidelinehim for four to six months.
Rushton said that after he had recovered, Goodall’s climb to the top of world boxing would resume.
“My plan, just like it was with Jeff (Horn) and Dennis (Hogan), is to keep evolving him, keep improving constantly,” he said.
“He is a work in progress.
“We have certainly not seen the best of him and I really believe Joe will be Australia’s first-ever world heavy weight champion.I don’t have any doubts.’’
Goodall already has a career to be proud of, having won a 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medal and then a rare bronze medalat the world boxing championships just prior to turning professional.
Rushton said he would also turn a negative into a positive by using Goodall’s enforced break to put weight on the athleticboxer, lifting him to 106kg.
Goodall will fight on June 27 in Acacia Ridge and then on Horn’s September card.
