A former nightclub owner has given an insight into a funky new bar for younger partygoers set to hit an entertainment hub on Brisbane’s bayside as the opening date for the venue draws closer.

Grant Long, 38, leased a site at 64 Edith St in Wynnum’s rejuvenated CBD, where he will open D&W Republic later this year as the modern lounge bar becomes the latest business in the bayside precinct.

The Wakerley resident, who owned two restaurants, a bar and a nightclub in Mackay while in his 20s before returning to Brisbane in 2012 revealed the venue would open in August.

“There’s been a little bit of a delay after we originally planned to be open this month but the trades are basically all but done and now we’re just awaiting some final approvements on things from council,” Mr Long said.

“We can’t wait for it to open, I’m so excited, I really get enjoyment out of just creating something where people can have a good time and enjoy themselves and that’s exactly what this place is going to be.”

Mr Long, who was also recently named one of the bayside’s top personal trainers, also revealed the opening hours for D&W Republic and said it was created to give Wynnum’s rising CBD a late-night option.

“Initially we’ll be open for night service, which is from 4pm until late which is midnight, but we also have the possibility of opening from midday and going later, however that’s what we’re starting with,” he said.

“With Wynnum experiencing such drastic changes in recent times and so many good restaurants and different venues, we really wanted to provide an option for people who want to have a late-night option.

“I think in recent years you’ve really seen a change in people just wanting to stay local and have a good time rather than going to the city, so we want to give them that option.”

After taking on the site, Mr Long said the main concept for the venue was a lounge bar, serving nice cocktails, craft beers and a good range of spirits while having a little bit of a dancefloor with a DJ playing remixed house music.

The venue will also have a bar menu with a burgers and wings theme.
