The development boom on Brisbane’s bayside could claim one of the area’s oldest businesses after a proposal was submitted for a mega residential complex at the site of a 58-year-old shop.
Simac Poultry Pty Ltd submitted amended plans on February 4 for a 68-unit project on the corner of Ronald and Andrew St in Wynnum, the current site of family-owned business, Manson Framers.
The eight-storey complex, which is now open for community consultation until March 1, will be one of Wynnum’s biggest residential developments with more units than DeMartini Fletcher’s The Enclave complex on Akonna St.
The site plan, which is next to the Wynnum railway line, indicates 119 car-parking spaces for residents and visitors.
Situated at the site of Manson Framers’ shop and warehouse, the project, if approved would mean the business, which was established in 1964 before moving to the current site in 1990 and has spanned four generations, would be forced to close or relocate.
The current owner of Manson Framers, Cameron Richardson who runs the business with his sister, said they planned to stay at the location as long as possible and would look at relocating if the development was approved.
The developer behind the project said they had owned the property for a long time and came to this opportunity to make an improvement to the site and location.
“I love Wynnum and its amenity,” he said.
“My proposed development will bring affordable housing to the area, considering that last year brisbane in general experienced a 30 per cent property value increase.”
He also said they had incorporated parts of the existing shopfront into the new design.
“We have provided great facilities for the occupiers in the new building,” the developer said.
“I think the Wynnum community and small businesses in Wynnum will benefit from this new addition.”
Councillor for Wynnum Manly, Peter Cumming (ALP), said building units on the railway line would provide residents with direct access to reliable public transport and other amenities.
He also said it would provide another boost for the rising Wynnum CBD and its entertainment precinct as well.
Cr Cumming said the project was the start of more unit complexes in the Wynnum CBD.
