Development proposal approved to extend Wynnum Shopping Centre but there’s more to come
Having already changed the face of a bayside suburb’s CBD, a development group has kicked-off plans to build on the historic revamp.
Developers who have already invested more than $74 million into changing the face of the Wynnum CBD have kicked-off plans to build on their history-making rejuvenation.
Hambros Pty Ltd – the company behind the opening of the long-awaited Wynnum Cinema in March – has had a development proposal to extend on the Wynnum Shopping Centre approved by the Brisbane City Council this week.
The proposal was submitted in March last year.
On top of that, Hambros have also bought another site in the bayside suburb’s CBD, lot 6 in Charlotte St, with immediate plans to extend the shopping centre and longer-term plans to redevelop the site into a retail, office and unit complex.
The 1619 sqm block of land, which is known locally as the old tennis courts at the back of the now closed Wynnum Central School, and is believed to have been bought for more than $1 million.
Justin Ham from Hambros said the shopping centre’s extension would be a new building on Florence St.
”This project beautifies the old loading dock area and adds another building that will be about 120 sqm,” he said.
“We see this extension an improvement for the area as Florence St has a lot of empty properties.
“The old loading dock area is in much need of a make over and is the final piece of our upgrades to the centre.”
Hambros have invested more than $14 million in revamping the Wynnum Shopping Centre – formally the Wynnum IGA Centre – with the old site transformed into a vibrant precinct featuring play centres, health shops, a pinball hall and popular entertainment venues such as The Fat Duck and Mr Hibachi.
Mr Ham said construction would start on the extension mid next year.
He also said they saw the purchase of the Charlotte St lot next to the centre as an important part of the future of the CBD.
