AN iconic heritage-listed site on Brisbane’s bayside is set for a giant redevelopment with multimillion-dollar plans almost 10 years in the making were revealed.

A development application, which could make Wynnum’s Nazareth House one of Queensland’s biggest aged care facilities, was submitted to the Brisbane City Council for approval in July.

The proposal, believed to cost upwards of $10m, is the first of six stages of a master plan for the site on 237 Wynnum North Rd from Nazareth Care, who first submitted applications to council for a redevelopment in 2012.

“The DA application highlights a new and exciting phase in the care of seniors by Nazareth Care in the Brisbane region,” she said.

“It will enable residents to move from the existing, almost 100-year-old building, to a new purpose built home offering improved amenity and quality of life for all.

“The facility has been designed to support the existing heritage building on site. It will be an exciting time to plan and eventually move our deserving elderly community across to a fully ‘fit for purpose’ home in which to live.

“The facility is designed to support the lifestyle of our residents in the local community and facilitate the provision of excellent care.

“This will be an asset for the local community for decades to come.”

Councillor for Wynnum Manly (ALP) Peter Cumming supported the proposal as it kept the historic Nazareth House building as the prominent feature of the site.

“I think that’s a very important part because that’s an iconic building in the area, so much so that you can see it from the water still after all these years,” he said.

The proposal follows a long list of developments happening on the bayside area, including a $10 million revamp of the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club as well as the Wynnum Cinema and residential complex, which is scheduled to open later this year.

Cr Cumming urged people to have their say on the proposal at the Brisbane City Council’s PD Online site.
