Two bayside colleges have won coveted Master Builders Queensland Awards for their new, state-of-the-art buildings.
The Ormiston College Centre for Learning and Innovation won the Brisbane Region award for eduction facilities over $10 million, while Moreton Bay Boys’ College took home the prize for buildings under $10 million with its new library.
And, looking at where on the campus the MBBC library is located, it’s not hard to see why the gigantic structure took out an award.

Stokes Wheeler project manager Peter Goodhew was tasked with building the $3.5 million modern-day library, complete with a “huge glass curtain wall” – smack-bang in the middle of the Manly West school.
“Logistically it was a very tight site which was very difficult to access,” Mr Goodhew said.
“We had to build a temporary road to get in. We called it the M1 of Moreton Bay.”
Designed by architectural practice Bickerton Masters, the challenging build took Stokes Wheeler 10 months and was completed in November last year.
Mr Goodhew, who has worked for Stokes Wheeler for 17 years and received four Master Builders awards, said the modern-day library was less about books and more about IT spaces and “collaborative learning spaces”.
“It overlooks the bay and has beautiful views, they really made the best of their situation,” Mr Goodhew said.
Down the road in the Redlands, Ormiston College’s Centre for Learning and Innovation – built by construction group Rohrig – also took home top honours in the education facility for projects over $10 million.
The building was officially opened by Queensland Governor, the Honourable Paul de Jersey, in April.
Headmaster Brett Webster said the learning centre had become the epicentre of the college, reactivating the heart of the campus.
“Students, staff, parents and visitors are enjoying the new dimensions of virtual reality, multimedia, drone flying, coding, robotics and the many, many more outstanding features within the extensive building,” Mr Webster said.
“It hosts junior school and secondary school libraries, a substantial Makerspace area, facilities for collaborative class study as well as areas for independent learning, and is noted as having Australia’s largest interactive floor space.
“After a long period of time conceptualising, researching, designing and constructing, the new completed CLI has become a busy hub, playing a vital role in the education of our students.”
Mr Webster said the college was delighted to learn the building had also won the 2019 Australian Institute of Architects Queensland Award for Educational Architecture for its designers, BSPN Architecture.
“The success of our new building is testament to the college’s ongoing commitment to innovation and, more importantly, the preparation of student needs for the 21st century and beyond, ensuring their success in tomorrow’s workforce,” he said.
The awards showcased the best the river city has to offer across residential, commercial and tourism construction.
In the residential categories, Wynnum builder and project manager David Bartle’s Hemmant Tower took out the top award in the Individual Home up to $250,000.
The unique two-storey house was built for Mr Bartle’s carpenter Mat Taylor – who wanted a house that was “simple, yet broke the mould” of what a traditional home should be.
