Hemmant Tower wins big in building awards for bold design

The winner of a coveted building award might just have built one of Brisbane’s most unique homes. Take a tour of the tower that rises out of a flood plain.

A BOLD, red tower completely clad in Colorbond steel rising out of a Brisbane flood plain has won a coveted building award.

Wynnum builder and project manager David Bartle’s Hemmant Tower took out the top award in the Individual Home up to $250,000 in the Master Builders Brisbane Housing and Construction awards.

The unique two-storey house was built for Mr Bartle’s carpenter Mat Taylor — who wanted a house that was “simple, yet broke the mould” of what a traditional home should be.

Designed by Wynnum West’s Baahouse and Baastudio Architecture, the home took Mr Bartle and Mr Taylor five months to complete.

Mr Bartle said because of the block’s location in a flood plain, they had to employ a “creative use of space” to work within the minimum and maximum building height.

“We’ve not wasted any space in the house. There’s a toilet and kitchen drawers under the stairs,” he said.

The award was Mr Bartle's’ second with Master Builders.

He said the biggest honour was knowing that Mr Taylor wouldn’t have changed any aspect of the house.

“The award is a bonus but having the owner being happy is the thing I enjoyed the most,” Mr Bartle's said.
