A new breeding ground for netball stars in Queensland had been unveiled after the launch of a state-of-the-art, $8.5 million venue in Brisbane’s east.
Members of the Brisbane City Council, including Councillor for Chandler Ryan Murphy and Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner cut the ribbon at the facility on 450 Manly Rd yesterday.
After a year of construction works, yesterday’s ceremony marked the completion of a project, which was six years in the making for Cr Murphy, following the demise of Bayside Netball in 2014.
Cr Murphy first pushed the project during his time as Councillor for Doboy.

The six-court venue, which also includes a new clubhouse, lighting, a turfed practice area and 135 carparks, is set to benefit thousands of aspiring netball players in southeast Queensland with the facility to be run by Netball Queensland.
It also adds to the recreational hub, which features a flashy, new kitchen for the Wynnum and Manly District Meals on Wheels Association.
Cr Murphy said it had been a long road to deliver this project but he was happy for residents that it was finally a reality.
“We started this project back in 2015, so it’s really exciting to see the sports park come together after six years in the making,” he said.
“These brand-new facilities will not only provide hundreds of local netballers with great facilities to train and play, but it will also help service our community’s most vulnerable as the new home of the Wynnum and Manly District Meals on Wheels Association Inc.”
Cr Murphy said the district sports park was part of council’s vision to enhance Brisbane’s liveability and support our outdoor lifestyles.
“After the demise of Bayside Netball in 2014, it’s been a long road back for netball in the Eastern suburbs” he said.
“Netball Queensland will now be able to deliver NetSetGo, localised training for club teams and local schools, walking netball, social and mixed netball competitions and non-traditional products and programs out of this facility.”
“It’s a red-letter day for netball on the bayside,” he said.
