Australia's wildest fraudsters: The biggest and boldest cons

A mother-of-three from Logan who stole thousands of dollars of stock from Myer, Coles and Kmart to fund her crushing addiction to drugs has been sentenced to prison.

Ashlee Maree McEvoy appeared via video link to plead guilty to 36 charges, spanning from February 11 2019 to 13 February 2021 at the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday.

The charges included six counts of stealing, three counts of stealing mail packages, two counts of entering premises to commit the indictable offence of stealing and one count of fraud.

The court heard McEvoy stole upwards of $3800 of stock over 15 months from Westfield Carindale, Myer and Kmart at Garden City, TK Maxx at Oxley and City Beach at Springfield.

The bulk of the stealing took place at Myer, where she racked up around $1800 in stolen goods on February 14, 2019, April 30, 2019 and August 1, 2019.

Among the items taken were a steam mop and a duvet cover.

McEvoy stole from Myer on three occasions in 2019, taking a total of around $1800 worth of stock.

McEvoy didn’t stop there, however.

On three occasions she stole parcels from homes in Springwood, she was found in possession of stolen identification and bank cards, and she was twice intercepted unlawfully driving cars belonging to other people.

During the most notable incident, McEvoy unlawfully drove a car that did not belong to her, with stolen registration plates attached, through several red lights and then sped onto the highway at Beenleigh, going 60kmh over the speed limit.

Defence lawyer David Gilmore of Gilmore Lawyers told the court McEvoy was seriously addicted to drugs and “largely itinerant” (homeless) for the duration of the offending.

“With these offences she was obtaining money in order to buy drugs,” Mr Gilmore said.

McEvoy was sentenced to three months imprisonment for the Commonwealth offence of stealing mail and released forthwith.

For the remainder of the offences she received a head sentence of 18 months imprisonment, was disqualified from driving for 18 months and ordered to pay $2840.01 restitution.
