Wild Brisbane chase in stolen car ends in near-tragedy

Two young men have been charged with 15 offences after allegedly leading police on a chase through Brisbane’s southside overnight in a stolen vehicle containing drugs and weapons.

The chase only ended when the men lost control of the vehicle and it ploughed into a front yard, narrowly missing a residence.

Police claim they detected the stolen utility on King Ave, Durack, just after midnight on Monday before they successfully deployed a tyre deflation device at Beatty Rd, Acacia Ridge.

Undeterred despite both sets of tyres being shredded to their rims, the 24-year-old Tanah Merah driver and his 25-year-old Acacia Ridge passenger then allegedly led police on a wild chase through the suburbs of Acacia Ridge, Moorooka, Rocklea, Oxley, Inala and Durack.

Police allege the pair weaved through traffic and drove on the incorrect side of the road until they eventually clipped a gutter at Mitchell St, Acacia Ridge, and ploughed into a front yard, coming to a stop just before a residence.

The driver abandoned the vehicle but was later located hiding in a backyard by the dog squad.

His passenger was taken into custody at the scene, police said.

During a subsequent search of the allegedly stolen vehicle, police allegedly located firearms, ammunition, knuckledusters and drugs.

The 24-year-old driver was charged with 14 offences including three counts of possessing dangerous drugs, three counts of possessing weapons, dangerous operation of a vehicle and receiving tainted property.

He was refused police bail and will appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

The 25-year-old passenger was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and bailed to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on January 18.
