QSL Basketball Top 5 Plays for Round 5

Highlight plays weren’t hard to come by this past weekend in the Queensland State League as a giant two-handed poster from Sunshine Coast Phoenix big man Nelson Kahler leads the top five plays.

In a round, which featured several dominant individual performers, the fifth round of the QSL also featured everything from high-flying alley-oop slams, a halfcourt buzzer beater and another chasedown block.

While there were highlight players across the league on the weekend, all of our top plays come from two games in the Sunshine Coast Phoenix’s win over the Logan Thunder and the RedCity Roar’s victory over the USC Rip.

See who made the list below.

1. NELSON KAHLER – SUNSHINE COAST PHOENIX

– Nelson Kahler continues to show he is one of the best big men in the league after an impressive performance against the Thunder, where he recorded 17 points, 21 rebounds and four blocks in his team’s win over Logan. But no play was more impressive then his highlight play in the second half, where he spun baseline from the post and sent home a two-hand slam over two Thunder defenders for the and-one basket.

2. MERVEIL NKONGOLO – REDCITY ROAR

– Merveil Nkongolo is arguably the highest flyer in the Queensland State League and he has shown it for the second consecutive week. After taking top spot last week with a chasedown block against the Southern Districts Spartans, Nkongolo takes second spot this week with this athletic alley-oop slam in the fourth quarter against the USC Rip – a special thanks to Heath Gameren for the on point pass.

3. HARRY FROLING/VERLE WILLIAMS JR – REDCITY ROAR

– A frequent feature in our top plays, Brisbane Bullets and RedCity Roar big man Harry Froling is back on our list after combining with speedy teammate Verle Williams Jr for this highlight dunk. It came in the third quarter of the win over USC, Williams stole the basketball and ran away seemingly for a layup but instead threw it off the backboard for a special alley-oop slam for Froling.

4. JACKSON POLLOCK – REDCITY ROAR

– Returning to Queensland’s top-tier of basketball after three years, Jackson Pollock has made an immediate impact for the Roar after debuting against the Southern Districts Spartans last week. On the weekend, he gave the fans something to cheer about with a halfcourt heave to beat the buzzer leading into three-quarter time. Probably shouldn’t have counted but the referees allowed the basket, so we will too.

5. HARRY FROLING – REDCITY ROAR

– USC Rip youngster Kai Bloom has been impressive in his debut senior season, including a highlight dunk against the SWM Pirates last week and the teenage guard thought he was in for another highlight play against the RedCity Roar on the weekend. But he was chased down by Harry Froling, who makes the top plays again with this impressive defensive play.
