A bayside man has faced court after assaulting a hospital security guard with a shoe, leaving him with scrapes and pain to his head and mouth following an epic drinking session.

Victoria Point resident, David Christopher Johnson, pleaded guilty in Cleveland Magistrates Court today (July 26) to one count of serious assault of an officer performing function.

The court heard the 31-year-old BP worker had been taken to hospital for medical attention on June 12 this year due to excessive drinking, where he assaulted a Redland Hospital security guard who had been instructed to detain him.

“He used his right hand to strike the victim on the right side of his head,” police prosecutor Sergeant Duncan Blackburn said.

“He then attempted to grab the victim in a headlock (and) put his right leg behind his to throw the victim off balance.”

The court heard the security guard suffered injuries to his head and mouth.

“He was just trying to do his job and trying to assist the defendant,” Sergeant Blackburn said.

Johnson's lawyer, Katelyn Sherrin, said her client had consumed a litre of liquor before the incident.

“He is extremely remorseful and expresses deep disappointment in himself,” Ms Sherrin.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta said Johnson‘s issues with alcohol needed to be addressed before they affected his family life.

“We need to right now help you not to get into anymore trouble,” Ms Vasta said.

Johnson was convicted and received a three year probation order with orders to attend counselling and programs.
