A young mother brought to her knees at the sight of her fire-ravaged house has described how her family is rallying after they were left nothing except the clothes on their backs.
Cassie Moore of Victoria Point reeled when her partner rang to say their Waratah Ave house was “on fire and everything was gone”.
At work at the time, Ms Moore raced home to find the usually peaceful street abuzz with police, firefighters and shocked neighbours.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services confirmed the house was “well alight” when they arrived at 11.27am on Friday.
It took three trucks to extinguish the blaze by 11.57am, with the property cleared by 12.55pm.
An investigation is under way and QFES on Friday feared the house was a write-off.
Ms Moore described a harrowing scene.
After she confirmed that her partner, 18-month-old daughter and two dogs were safe, the fire’s full horror struck.
“I turned to see the house and it brought me to my knees,” Ms Moore said.
“I couldn’t believe it; my whole life was destroyed.
“I ran a business from home also and all of our equipment and stock, everything was gone. “The irreplaceable things like the kids’ baby photos and sentimental things were all gone.
“Our two dogs made it out but sadly our bird perished in the fire.
“We have been living with my mum since the fire.
“It’s been a devastating blow to our family – you don’t realise just how much in your daily life you take for granted.
“You know, things like having a hair brush or a toothbrush or deodorant.
“We had the clothes on our backs – that was it.”
The family was taken aback by the support generated by a GoFundMe page started in their name.
“The response from the community has been so amazing,” Ms Moore said.
“I don’t even have words to say just how grateful I am.
“It really restored my faith in humanity to see the amount of support that comes from complete strangers in a time of need; it really has been the silver lining through this whole thing and has been what has gotten me through without breaking down completely.”
The ordeal has left the family financially stricken and unable to rely on their home-based small business, Customising Creations, they said.
“The process now is to find and apply for another home to move into but without our business it makes it almost impossible to have enough of an income to find a property, especially with the current rental market,” Ms Moore said.
“We are also trying to obtain all of our identification materials as that was all lost in the fire.”
