No bail as police allegedly find 50 grams heroin and thousands in cash

Appearing via phone at the Cleveland Magistrates Court Sian Louise Calder, 28, was denied bail on Thursday.

The court heard Calder was a subject of Operation Romeo Heart Throb which has been investigating the trafficking of methylamphetamine in the bayside over the last year.

Police prosecutor Emily Ollenburg said a co-accused of Calder had allegedly been found in possession of more than 35 grams of Ice.

Ms Ollenburg said the stakes were too high to risk her release given her prolific history of drug offending which included eight instances while on bail.

“This behaviour has been continuing for a significant period of time,” Ms Ollenburg said.

“She is an unacceptable risk of committing further offences if she is released into the community.

“It is also likely that she will receive a jail term if she is convicted and may be looking at serving a significant amount of time with all the allegations before the court.”

However, defence solicitor James Wallace said Calder, a Cleveland woman, had only earned $18,000 dollars during the period under investigation.

“It is not a suggestion that she is rolling in drug dealers’ money from trafficking,” he said.

Mr Wallace said his client was no longer on methylamphetamine and had plans to live with her parents in Toowoomba which would not only remover her from the bayside but “all of southeast Queensland”.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta interjected the police prosecutor’s objection at this and made clear release would not be an option.

The magistrate listed seven past incidents of Calder’s most recent drug offending and six times she failed to appear at court.

“There is a number of times that you have failed to appear (before the court),” Magistrate Vasta said.

“Once or twice you sent an email through asking for an adjournment.

“Once or twice you’ve sent emails with doctor’s letters.

“You are clearly a drug addict and I don’t think you have just magically given up drugs overnight.

“You are 25 weeks pregnant which I think is a very, very good reason to keep you in custody for the sake of that poor baby.

“But the main reason I am keeping you in jail is because on a number of occasions you have kept offending while on bail.”

Calder is scheduled to next appear before the court on July 30.
